Re: Setup question

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Ah, OK, that kind of monitoring. That's our software update feature.

I'm not an expert on that, so I can give you a basic outline, and then I
recommend going to the sms.software_updates to talk to people who know what
they are talking about.

The basic idea is you can install several different scan tools to look for
specific types of software updates. Microsoft has the Inventory Tool for
Microsoft Updates (ITMU). Dell also has a tool, if you own Dell servers and
want to scan them. It's called, unsurprisingly, Inventory Tool for Dell
Updates (ITDU). There were some special scan tools created for special
software updates. There are a few other flavors of scan tool out there but I
don't remember them all.

When you install a scan tool, you run a separate msi setup outside the SMS
admin console, but during the installation, it will create packages,
programs, advertisements, and collections in the admin console for you
(assuming you accpet all the default options.) Usually there are two sets of
things created - one set to push the scan tool out to clients and the other
set to act as a catalog synchronization host. Not all inventory tools do
catalog synchronization to a catalog of updates on the Internet, so you
don't always get synch host stuff. If you have one, the synch host program
runs periodically and brings down information about all the new updates
(though not necessarily the actual update files themselves). The scan tool
runs on the client and then passes the information back up through SMS
hardware inventory (which requires SMS hardware inventory be enabled). Then
you run the Distribute Software Updates Wizard to create yet another set of
packages, programs, and advertisements based off the catalog information to
give the clients whatever they are missing. (This requires that you have the
SMS software distribution stuff configured, like the advertised programs
client agent and distribution points.)

There is a guide to how to do all this, though it's a bit old and still
talks about the predecessor to ITMU.
It's on our SMS docs page
http://www.microsoft.com/smserver/techinfo/productdoc/default.mspx#EDIAC

Also, each scan tool comes with its own deployment guide that should detail
all the collections, pacakges, programs, and advertisements it creates. The
all feed into the Distribute Software Updates Wizard, which is also
documented in the SMS 2003 F1 help file.

Hope that helps

Cathy,

I already have monitoring on my server what I want is to see what windows
hotfixes are on the server and to push out updates to that server so how
would I do this?

Thanks,
Jay

Hi, Jay,
What exactly do you want to do with these 10 servers?

SMS is used for change and configuration management. We can inventory
those
10 servers, but if you want real-time monitoring, you really want
Microsoft
Operations Manager (MOM). MOM works by configuring rules to watch for
various conditions and alerting you when those conditions are met or
exceeded. You can get sets of pre-made rules by installing management
packs,
which are available as free downloads for Microsoft server products. You
can
go to
http://www.microsoft.com/mom/default.mspx
for more information about MOM.

There's also information up there about MOM 2005 Workgroup Edition. I
don't
know much about it. Installing, configuring and maintaining some of our
enterprise network products for 10 servers can be overkill, so I know we
are
looking at making products that work well for smaller orgs.
http://www.microsoft.com/mom/workgroup/evaluation/overview.mspx

On the other hand, if you want to inventory your servers and deploy
software
updates or other software packages, SMS cna help there. On our SMS 2003
product documentation page, we have a section called "learn about SMS"
where
you can get some basic information.

Hope that helps!

All,

I am new to SMS 2003 can someone please tell me how to set it up to
monitor
10 server? Do I set this up when I install SMS2003? Or is this
something
I
setup after the install. I only want it to look at these 10 computers
not
every computer in our network.

Thanks,
Jay
