Scott,
1. Are the two domains in the same forest?
2. As far as I remember you only need to add the site server machineaccount
to the localgroup SMS_SiteSystemToSQLConnection_<SiteCode>
3. Have you tried using psexec.exe (from sysinternals.com) to start cmd.exe
and try to connect to the SQL server (net use * \\sqlserver\c$)
