SMS 2003 - adding Secondary site... driving me -mental- :-/

Hi all,
This is driving me nuts, I hope someone can help before I start hurting
small creatures to relieve the stress.
Briefly:
- new implementation of SMS 2003 in a lab
- one Primary server, extended the Schema, advanced security, added
correct permissions to the "System" AD container, can see that the
Primary site has added a "SMS-Site-xxx" object to the container
- this server and the server I'm trying to create as a Secondary are on
the same LAN in the lab but are on different subnets. DNS is all sweet,
name resolution no problem.
- can browse to the other server's administrative shares no problem.
- select "Add new secondary site", go through the motions, add a Site
Sender, etc.
- nothing happens. Nada. The new secondary site shows as a "pending" in
my console. The other server is clearly not doing anything. One message
(the last one, 20 minutes ago) shows
SMS_HIERARCHY_MANAGER 3310 ... has initiated a remote installation
.... etc.
That's it. I've tried all sorts, and it just isn't working. Any ideas,
anyone?
ta,
j.
.
