This doesn't make sense at all, we don't need domain admin credentials
to install the clients?

IIRC, what is needed permissions wise is Local admin, which you already
have, and an account that can be used to download the client.msi.

If you are in an active directory environment within a single forest,
sms will use the machine account to download the client.msi. If that
doesn't work we use the logged in user account and if that still fails
the Advanced Client network access account.

So followup questions.
Is this client a domain member?
Of an active directory domain?
The local admin you talked about was this a domain member?
Did he have access to the client.msi?
Have you configured an Advanced Client Network Access Account?
Did it have access to the client.msi?
