All the sms server components have to be a member of a domain.
The workgroup support that is mentioned for sp1 is only for advanced
clients, and no not all clients have to be a member of the same
workgroup.
Heartbeat discovery does not discover any new resources, it generates a
heartbeat for allready discovered resources. If you don't have an Active
directory environment then try network discovery, and more specifically
fill in the dhcp tab of network discovery.
Once that is done update your collection manually & press the refresh
button.
