That would be the HKLM\software\microsoft\sms\identification registry key.
You can use regedt32 to see if it exists and what the permissions on it are.
Sitecomp runs under the sms service account - does that account have rights
to the key? Is the account enabled and not locked out? Can you restart the
sms_site_component_manager service successfully, proving the service account
isn't screwed up?
Check the status messages to see if something else may be causing or having
problems.
