RE: Licensing / Design query

Thanks. You've answered my question.

Can you expand a bit on deployment packages options? I am aware of other
solutions out there (such as Altiris) and we are looking at Config Mgr as a
cost-effective solution through the purchase of client core CALs and one
Config Mgr Server.

Can we carry out branch deployment (deployment of apps per physical site)
through the use DFS-hosted shares at each site or would we need a Config Mgr
Server for each site if we wanted to do so? SMS / Config Mgr site design is
still confusing to me at this stage and it's important we understand the
infrastructure and license requirements for using the multiple site design as
opposed to the single site option.

Thanks.

Keeping in mind I don't help people design their SMS hierarchy, and this is
just my opinion: short answer, yes. 1 configMgr primary site in the head
office to support 300 workstations (6 sites * 50 per site ~300 workstations).

Look into the possibilities of BITS deployment of packages over the WAN vs.
Branch DPs vs. Secondary Sites vs. a possible 3rd party solution for software
deployment. You might decide on a mix of solutions depending upon the links
& # of users at a site.

We are considering SMS / Systems Center Configuration Manager for our
environment to assist in deployment of applications, software patches and
asset management. Our environment consists of 6 geographical sites with as
few as 5 users in each location (and no more than 50). Each site has a domain
controller running DHCP, DNS and DFS and our main systems are hosted in our
head office (Exchange, Sharepoint, SQL, WSUS). WAN links are at least 1Mbps
between each location (meshed IPSec VPN network). DFS-R in Windows 2003 R2
works a treat with this and we already use this for deploying some
applications through group policy. We also use WSUS for deploying Microsoft
updates. One central WSUS server has been sufficient as we use BITS to
throttle the bandwidth used.

Would we be able to have one single SMS / Config Mgr server in our head
office to manage all our client computers?
