That could work but it would require some testing. Plus, in SMS2k3 wouldn't you have to compile the SMS_def.mof on all clients anyway so really it is a script, sort of. :-)

Windows has a win32_directory namespace in wmi.
So if you don't mind to inventory all folders on your systems than this shouldn't be that difficult a mofedit. (Sherry, we need some assistance here :-)
Alternatively, you could use the view instance provider to select only the specific folder you want to inventory. (Sherry, I am just bluffing here, I am in way over my head when it comes to the view instance provider).
