Re: Missing Inventory

I have configured WINS entries on the untrusted domain pointing at the IP
address of the correct MP. These were required to get the site assignment
done.

The workstations themselves are unable to resolve the hostname of the
management point directly to an IP address. This is because it is not
registered on the WINS infrastructure the w/s's are pointing at and although
a domain has been created on the DNS infrastrcuture the clients are looking
at ( and hosting a record for the management point ), the workstations can't
resolve as the domain is not in the suffix search order. Fully qualifying
the host does succesfully resolve.

I will add the domain to the search suffix order on the workstation and kick
off an inventory cycle again to see if that makes any difference.

As I say the inventory logfile reports a success in sending to the MP, but I
don't see it getting processed by the MP_hinv.log

Thanks, the MP is fully functional for all other clients assigned to this
site.. It is only the workstation/s on the new network connected via the VPN
that have a problem.

Sorry Sherryl, there is no associated Bad MIF, as I say the XML report
generated at the client and sent to the MP does not appear in the MP_hinv.log
and is therefore not converted to MIF format for processing.

The problem seems to exist in transferring the XML file between the client
and the MP.

In your SMS Console, Site Status, Component Status,
SMS_Inventory_Data_Loader; are there any errors or warnings? right-
click, show messages, warnings (or errors), The description will
indicate where on your server the bad mif (badly formed hardware
inventory file) was placed. Check out those .MIFs (just open in
notepad), and see if any of them appear to originate from this
client. If so, one thing to try would be to have that client send a
"Full Hardware Inventory", instead of a delta--which it will always
attempt a delta by default. There are several tools or scripts that
let you instruct a single client to send a full HW Inventory; I'll
direct you to Roger Zander's SMS Client Center: http://sourceforge.net/projects/smsclictr/
as one resource.

I have installed an advanced client on a workstation that is in a domain with
no trust in place to the domain where my SMS Server exists ( with MP and SLP
roles ). The workstation is able to be assigned to the correct site through
creating WINS entries for the SLP location and MP_(Sitecode).

I have been able to succesfully deploy software to the workstation, however
I am not seeing any inventory appear for it in the DB.

On the client side inventory succesfully ran and then suggested it had sent
the report ot the MP.

Inventory: Successfully sent report. Destination:mp:MP_HinvEndpoint, ID:
{95509823-E6D5-4435-A426-966194BDE120}, Timeout: 80640 minutes MsgMode: Not
Signed, Not Encrypted

When I check the MP_hinv.log file on the MP, there is no record of the XML
file relating to this client. I have initiated inventory several times on
the client, and all looks good ( suggesting the report being sent succesfully
) but on my MP there is no suggestion the XML file is picked up and then
translated to a MIF file.

The 2 networks are connected via a VPN ( with no NAT'ing ) there are
firewalls in place, but I have been told there is an ANY-ANY rule in place,
so nothing should be getting blocked..

Anyone any ideas on where to look now..?

Many Thanks...

Can the client resolve the name of the mp to an ip address?
