Troubleshooting Software Inv Discrepancies

Our helpdesk is using the SMS web reports to find which machines may have
gotten skipped during our upgrade to office 2003, no we aren't using SMS
(we're on sms 2003 sp1) to deploy the update we still have people using
databases requiring Access 97 and management sees no point in using SMS to
deploy the software though it should be easy to do. Anyway, some of the PC's
show up with only one version of office, yet when I go to check the PC
itself - it has both Office 97 and 2003 versions on it but it's only showing
up on the report as having 97.
Example: AAD and AAE have Office 2003 installed, yet show only Office 97 as
being installed on the report.
AAD WINWORD.EXE Microsoft Word for Windows® 97 application file 8.0
5324560 8/1/1997
AAE WINWORD.EXE Microsoft Word for Windows® 97 application file 8.0
5324560 8/1/1997
AAH WINWORD.EXE Microsoft Word for Windows® 97 application file 8.0
5324560 8/1/1997 1:00:00 AM
AAH WINWORD.EXE Microsoft Office Word 11.0.5604 12037688 8/6/2003
1:24:20 PM C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11
Is there a good way to troubleshoot this? What steps/process should I
follow?
I have software inventory configured to run every 16 hours and these two
machines are on all the time.
