Client uninstall issues

Hello all,

I recently inherited the task of implementing SMS on our network.
Actually, an attempt was made to implement SMS prior to my
involvement, but it ended in failure. The Admin console wasn't
connecting to the DB and I don't think software distribution was
working correctly so the network admin just uninstalled the whole
thing from the server. Unfortunately he didn't uninstall the client
agents from our client machines before he took down the server. Now we
have no SMS server and a handful of client machines with the advanced
client agents still installed. (Actually, I'm only assuming they're
advanced clients since 1. The network admin is pretty sure he
installed advanced clients, and 2. If they were Standard clients, they
would automatically uninstall themselves after 60 days of not talking
to their CAP).

I've got a few questions about this scenario:

How important is it to uninstall the SMS 2003 client agents from the
client nodes given that we're foregoing SMS 2003 and implementing SCCM
2007 when it comes out? Is there potential for problems if the agents
are left on the machines?

Can anyone think of a way to find which computers have the agents
installed on them? I've thought of trying to glue together some kind
of script that looks in the c$ share for telltale files that would
signify the presence of client agents and then running Ccmclean.exe if
there's a positive match. Ugly, but effective.

Any advice on this scenario would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
StandardGreen
