This newsgroup is for "SMS Installer" a utility for repackaging
applications.
In the future I would suggest sms.admin for most questions, you'll get more
help that way.
As for your questions now, there are help guides, admin guides,
configuration guides that come with SMS. These all are great. Especially
the Install and Config guide.
You should also go to Microsoft's website(s) (there are a couple different
SMS websites TechNet has one and the Microsoft website has one) for SMS and
read everything you can find.
I would go to www.myitforum.com (bookmark it) and read all the sms 2003
stuff, sign up for mailing lists and get use to using the forums there.
I would take a class to get some experience and have someone to ask
questions to.
I would read through all the newsgroup posts on Microsoft.public.sms.admin
I would install it in a lab environment or on a Virtual machine and start
going through things.
I would consider hiring a consultant to come in and help with the main
design and configuration work, and even doing some knowledge transfer and
help getting things going.
SMS is one of those things that can help your company a lot, but you really
need to know what you are doing to design it, configure it, and use it.
As for scanning for things, in SMS this is called discovery. There are many
forms of discovery available. Some that use AD, some that use DHCP, some
that use domain info, SNMP info, etc etc... many ways, even manual can be
done. Trust me the problem with SMS isn't discovering things it is
discovering too much if you don't do it right (for example you can get info
on pretty much anything with an IP, even things like printers, or network
devices that you probably don't want in SMS).
All along the way be careful, there are things you can do in SMS that can
bring down your network if you aren't careful.
Patches, yes SMS does that too, even if the machine is off and when it comes
back online it will do it.
