Sorry Kim but I just noticed your reply. The server is currently Win2K3 SP2
- is the membership still required?

Testing the System Administrator Console from the XP SP2 workstation using myIs the server running Win2k3 sp1 by any chance?
admin account (which works fine directly on the SMS server) failed.
Next I thought maybe it was due to installing the console on the XP machine
using the SP3 upgrade download so I uninstalled and installed the original
SMS (without any service packs) and upgraded the console with the downloaded
SP3. Still not able to connect.
Found, on the XP workstation, in the adminui.log
:Info(ConnectServer): Connection to server. Network : \\SMS_002\root\sms
:Error(ConnectServer): Possible UI connection error code is -2147023174
(0x800706ba)
I've searched google and the news groups, so far, and have found no solution
to being able to connect to the SMS via XP workstation using the
Administrator Console. Anyone have a solution?

All good questions as I didn't think about trying to launch the System
Administrator Console with my admin account on the XP workstation until I
left the office for the day...
I do not remember seeing anything during the SP3 upgrade which asked which
mode I would like to use. How would I know which mode it is in at this time?
If I log onto the SMS server directly with my admin account, connection to
SMS works fine. If I log onto an XP workstation with the same account and
launch the SP3 installed System Administrator Console, I get the same results
"Connection Failed: \\sms_site\root\sms"
Could it be a component I am forgetting to install on the XP workstation?
Thanks for your help

Did you switch security modes by chance? In other words, change your
security mode from standard to advanced at time of upgrade? Also, does a
user with sms administrative rights have access to your reports?

I'm trying to set up a user to have access to reports only. I have addedthe
user to the SMS Admins group and SMS Reporting Users on the SMS server butthe
continue to get the Connection Failed: \\sms_site\root\sms
What are all the components to provide access?
Membership of the SMS Admins group is one that I know of, membership of
SMS Reporting Users (I believe is required).(as
I have just upgraded the server to SP3 and performed the following again
I did when SP2 was applied)DCOM
Run dcomcnfg.exe, expand Component Services, expand My Computer, expand
Config, find and right-click on the SMS_REPORTING_POINT node and click on
Properties. Go to the Security tab and in the top section "Launch and
Activation Permissions" click on Customize and then click on the Edit
button. Once the Security window opens you want to verify that the "SMS
Reporting Users" group is listed in the Group or names window and that it
has Local Activation permissions. If not, make this change. SMS 2003 SP3
will lock down these DCOM permissions and give the error that you are
seeing.
If so, add your account to the distributed com users group on the server.
