Hi Ryan,
I'm not sure that the capinst.exe will run properly via a UNC path; however,
you can easily amend your batch file to map a network drive (temporarily) to
call capinst.exe as follows:
net use t: /delete
net use t: \\sms_server\SMSClient
t:\i386\capinst.exe /AdvCli /SLP=laxsms /advclicmd smssitecode=auto
ccmenablelogging=true ccmlogmaxsize=1000000 ccmloglevel=0
net use t: /delete
You may want to do some verification beforehand, so that you only install
the SMS client if it is not already on your boxes.
Also, as far as the client pointing to the wrong server, you should use SMS
Trace and look at the following log on the client in the
%WINDIR%\System32\CCM\Log folder:
LocationServices.log (Verify what the client is "discovering" for its
Management Point
If the server the client discovers is not what you expect, then depending on
your Enterprise architecture (i.e. Active Directory or WINS), you may need to
make some follow-on to either Active Directory or WINS. Since I'm not quite
sure of your configuration, your site boundaries could be an issue but I
doubt it based on your original question.
Hope it helps!

Thanks, that worked! Now I have a differnet issue. Trying to install the SP3.
client on a Vista workstation. First I ran the ccmclean utility and removed
the advanced client on the Vista machine, and now I am trying to install the
SP3 client through a logon batch file. My command looks like this:
\\hhsdc\netlogon\capinst.exe /advcli /slp=laxsms /advclicmd smssitecode=auto
ccmenablelogging=true ccmlogmaxsize=1000000 ccmloglevel=0
But everytime I run this, nothing happens. I'm watching the processes on
task manager, and capinst runs for a half second but then disappears and the
client does not get installed. Any ideas? When I do the push install from the
server, the client still points to the old SMS server.

That's not what I meant.
On the advanced tab on the properties you set at the top of this dialog
there is an applies onto listbox. Make sure this list This object AND
all child objects

Kim - "Allow inheritable permissions from the parent to propagate to this

it and re-checked it just to make sure the permissions propagated down.

live in the environment on another box). On the new SP3 server, I am
recieving an error in the HIERARCHY_MANAGER component. It states: "Systems
Management Server cannot update the already existing object "SMS-Site=LSE" in
Active Directory". ID: 4912
I was recieving a message stating it couldn't even write to the SMS
container in AD so I gave the SMS Server account full access the the System
container and the System Management container in A.D. After I did that, it
then wrote one file within the System Management container (SMS-Site-LSE),
but it did not create any subfolders like the previous site has in this
location (SLP and MP folders).
So it has full access to the folders (at least I believe it does), but now
it seems to be trying to update the file and doesn't have access to do that.
Any ideas what I can try? Thanks, Ryan.
You need to hit the advanced button on the security tab to be able to do
this.
