Re: Program that requires drive letter fails

Could it be because you are running under the "Local system" account which
does not have access to anything off of the local PC.

Sean,

I disabled the antivirus client and there are no firewalls enabled. The
client and server are on the same IP subnet, so there are no hardware
firewalls involved, either.

I ran the test again, and it still fails. It does indicate that it is
mapping drive Z, but it gives an "Access denied" error. I think that this
is
related to permissions, but I am puzzled because if you don't map a drive
and
you set the advertisement to download the package before running, it works
fine, which seems to indicate that the SMS client has enough permissions
to
access the source data under some circumstances. However, once you set it
to
map a drive or run from UNC path, problems start to occur. I'm not sure
what
the permissions problems may be. One thing is that the distribution point
is
set up on a server share instead of just a "server" where it would
normally
pick the drive on the server with the largest amount of free space, like
E$.
I don't see how that would make a difference, as SMS seems to be putting
the
same permissions settings on the SMSPKG folder on the share as it would
put
if that folder were located at the root of the E$ share.

I did not try testing with a "clean" profile, but I have tested both in
the
lab and production environments and I don't think that the user profiles
are
involved in the problem. It must be something with the permissions on the
distribution point. I can try setting up a new distribution point that is
not on a server share to see if that makes a difference.

Hello Bill,

I ran the test with the option "Run with administrative rights" and
"Whether or not a user is logged on". The msi test is finished
successfully, too. Regarding the log, the share folder is mapped to
driver
Z: again. Do you have a firewall on server or client? Can you test again
with a clean environment, like create a new user (with the new profile),
and disable all security software like virus/network firewall?
