Re: SP3 install

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Sms 2.0 used to do this automatically and it was nasty in large environments. All clients would try and update within an hour, so it required extensive planning as it would swamp your network if you weren't careful.

Sms 2003 puts you in the driver seat which ultimately is the better approach.

Thanks Garth, this is exactly what I have done. I've created a collection for all clients that have the old version (2.50.4160.2000) and then install/upgrade the client agent (Right click -> All tasks -> Install client...).

But I was hoping that this would have been an automatic process since the Primary and secondaries are already running the latest SP3.

Anyway, your query also helps in determining how many clients i still need to upgrade. Thanks again.

The simplest way to install/upgrade the client is to Right click a collection | All Tasks | Install Client.

Then click Next | next | select always install (repair or upgrade existing clients) | Next | Finished

This query will show you "Count of installed client agents"

Hi Sherryl,

Not sure if I'm allowed to reply to this thread with a seperate issue with
SMS SP3, but here it is...

I've installed SMS SP3 three days ago on 1 Central Primary and 6 secondary
site servers and the install went smoothly without any hitch.

But 3 days later I find that only 4 machines (out of 700 +) have upgraded
the SMS Client to the latest version (2.50.4253.3000). Re-installing the sms
client and doing a 'Hardware Invventory Cycle' on the machine seems to work.

I thought that since the Primary and secondary are running the latest SP the
clients should get the latest sms client version, but this is not happening.
Have I missed something during the install? Is there any way I can force my
sms client machine to install/upgrade to the latest SP3 client version?

Microsoft does not have any documentation about SP3 as 'Jamie Lloyd' have
pointed out so it makes it hard for us (sms newbie) to verify if we have
deployed the SP properly.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated...

just realised that there is no documentation on the SMS web sites for SP3.
Can anyone point me at it?

thats brilliant guys, thanks very much.

That's correct. SP3 does not require R2. You can upgrade from SP2 to SP3
directly.

If you have R2, you can install R2 after SP3 is installed, you can also
upgrade a SP2 site with R2 to Sp3. R2 was really just a bunch of additional
tools.

am i right in thinking that you can only upgrade to SP3 if you are
running R2
of SMS 2003? if so, do i need to have SA to upgrade to R2 or can i just
down
load it?

I have followed the link on the SMS home pages to an update for R2 with
SP3
but I am not sure if i can use this on SMS2003 SP2 without buying
licences
etc.
You do not need R2 components; and you are said you are already on
SP2, so you can upgrade. R2 was really just a bunch of additional
tools that you could add to SP2, but they are not required. I just
updated the lab from SMS 2003 SP2 to SP3; and I didn't have any R2
components loaded in the lab.
