You will be writing a complex custom application / script for that.

I need to query the registry on all our users' machines. I am looking for
machines that do/ do not have the LOCAL SERVICE and its permission on the
following reg key:
HKLM\SYSTEM\Current ControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServers\winreg

You are right, although it depends which information you wish to get
back.
There are some scripts around (smsexpert site for instance) that can be
used
but sometimes, enabling the information into the sms_def.mof is enough.
What are you looking for exactly ?

Thanks for the suggestions.I will look into those websites. I know the
basics
of SMS but I have been asked for reports/queries that require
customization
of the hardware inventory and this is my problem. From my understanding
if
you need an information that is not in the default smsdef.mof you need
to
create a customize MOF or MIF files and for this you need to know
scripting
and wmi. Am I correct?

Hi
A good way to get used to what Wmi is and the way it works is to use
the Wmi
tools from Microsoft, and particularly the Wmi Object Browser. This
can for
instance show you where the Serial Number of the computer is to be
found
(bios usually, but not always), the exact model of your computer as
it would
be detected by Sms, etc. There is also a Wmi Scriptomatic that allows
you to
easily create scripts that use Wmi to query those properties.
Wmi tools : search for WMI Administrative Tools in Ms Downloads

Scriptomatic tool from the scripting tech center.

As Garth says, you do not need to know Wmi to use Sms. Once you know
how Sms
works, you would probably want to use Wmi to extend your inventory.
For Books, I used Wmi essentials from Paperback, but at the time
(2001),
there was not much choice. Good book though. Understanding Wmi
scripting from
Alain Lissoir should be fine too, based on what i read from the
author.
Hope it helps

I do not have much experience with WMI and from my understanding in
order to
take fully advantage of SMS you need to know WMI. I've read a few
things
about it on the internet especially from the Microsoft website but
nothing
really helped me. I have decided to buy a book instead but I do not
know what
book to buy. I need a book for beginners, something that will
explain WMI in
details. Any suggestions?
Thanks
