Old workstation objects left in SMS after reimaging PC

We are having a problem keeping old machine names out of our
collections in SMS. Our hardware tech images the machines out of the
box using it's serial number as the machine name to get a jump on
having them ready for replacments, new users, etc.
Then, after deploying it to a user, he renames the machine based on
the user's username and office. The problem with this is that we end
up with the old machine names still left in SMS unless he remembers to
go in and delete them. Or, if he forgets to rename them completely we
can't easily distinguish the new deployed machine from an old machine.
If you don't have similar problems to this would you be willing to
share what method you use to get machines ready for deployment or your
imaging/deployment process in general?
Thank you in advance.
