Yes you can query a particular DC.
Within the Active Directory System Discovery, add an active directory
container | Custom LDAP or GC query
Then Enter LDAP://<Server Name>/DC=<Domain Name>, DC=<Domain Ext>

I can not find specific information how SMS retrieves it's information from
AD, but I best calculated guess is that SMS will search for a Global
Catalog
to read objects like Computers? Is there a way to change / control that
behavior?
At a customer site, we have a DC at a remote site (for mass installation
purposes, sysprep images with SMS Client installed) that is not a GC. New
computer objects are written to the remote DC. In the current situation we
notice a delay in SMS detecting the machines to deploy a standard set of
software. Discovery Methods run every 15 minutes, necessary collections
refresh at 20 minutes.
I do not think the problem is with SMS, so I came up with a few solutions:
- Create a script to replicate the remote DC info every 15 minutes
- Make the remote DC a GC
- remove remote DC, upgrade the line temporarily to support the increase
of
traffic
There are some security considerations to be done by the customer security
manager, So if we could tweak the AD system discovery to a specific DC,
that
would make it a little easier. Anyone?
