Help with patching

I'm testing SMS 2003 SP2 in a lab and I'm testing patching and software
updates with it. However, I'm running into a problem... I think. I
was able to download the ITMU (isnt there a way to use the MBSA 2.0)
and see the patched/updates under Software Updates in the SMS console.
Now here is my question - I downloaded the Patch Management Using
Systems Management Server 2003 document from Microsoft (finding it less
than useful) but I still dont have the patches installing. I can
create an advertisment for the inventory to run but any patch I try to
push out fails. Can someone point me to a good location for
documentation and patch management? This is all new to me so I
apologize in advance if this is a newbie question.
