First, thanks to Kim Oppalfens for the suggestion. It's greatly appreciated.
In response to your two questions:
Question 1:
Just like Kim said, software updates are reported through hardware
inventory. You can check one computer's software update information by
right clicking on a computer in collections and choosing:
"All tasks"->"Start Resource Explorer".
In Resource Explorer, locate "Software Updates History" by extending
"Hardware History".
Question 2:
It is my understanding that if you installed Office XP by AIP, you are
recommended to update AIP first, then deploy it to the clients.
