According to Microsoft SMS can extract WMI info. How is this acomplished?

SMS hardware and software inventory is captured by collecting information
from WMI. The SMS hardware inventory classes, and subsequent delta
inventories are stored in WMI. Hardware inventory mappings take place by
definitions stored in the sms_def.mof file, which can be extended.
