RE: Upgrading SMS 2.0 SP5 to SMS 2003 SP2

Hello,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

For your question, I'd like to provide you with the following information
for your reference:

Client upgrading process from SMS 2003 Advanced client to SMS 2003 SP1
advanced client is different with the previous upgrading process. While
upgrading from SMS 2.0 to SMS 2003, the SMS 2.0 client will upgrade itself
automatically.

In order to prevent it from upgrading automatically, the Cliupgrade.exe can
be used to control the client upgrade behavior in your site. You can run
the ''cliupgrade.exe /disable'' on the clients that you don't want to
upgrade automatically from SMS 2.0 to SMS 2003.

While we upgrade from SMS 2003 ADV client to SMS 2003 SP1 ADV client,
things will be totally different.

Advanced Clients, unlike Legacy Clients, do not automatically update when a
newer version of the Advanced Client software is available at the SMS site.
You can take a look at the following URL for more information:
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sms/sms2003/instreln.mspx>
(Look the paragraph: Upgrading From SMS 2003)

So from SMs 2.0 to SMS 2003 SP1, the Client Upgrade Control tool is still
necessary.

Whitepaper can be found:

Hope that helps!

Thanks & Regards,

Ken Zhao

| Hello all,
|
| Couple of quick questions re. an SMS upgrade.
|
| I'm going to be doing a phased upgrade (site-by-site). As I'm doing the
| upgrade using the SMS2003SP1 (slipstreamed) build (don't worry, I've run
the
| SP2 version of EXTADCH.EXE), does this mean that I don't need to deploy
the
| Client Upgrade Control tool? As I see it I don't need this as SP1
doesn't
| auto-upgrade adv. client capable systems to legacy client. However, I
| require clarification.
|
| Has anyone come across a KB that steps through an in-place upgrade?
|
| Please feel free to chip in with some advice. I'm in the lab phase at
the
| moment.
|
| Thanks!
|
