Re: Configuring multiple DPT servers at a large site

Hi Bill,

I am assuming that DPT == Protected Distribution Point, please post
again if this is inaccurate.

Generally, you will want to put protection in place to keep clients
from one site from using the WAN to get a package, so you configure
only certain subnets (or AD sites) to to access a DP. If you put a DP
in a remote site, you will want to protect it so that only systems from
that site can access that DP.

The Management Points are responsible for returning a list of DPs for
the client - From the Systems Management Server 2003 Concepts,
Planning, and Deployment Guide:

How clients find distribution points

In an Active Directory environment, SMS queries Active Directory to
determine in which site's roaming boundaries the Advanced Client is
located. Active Directory returns the site code of the client's
assigned site or of another site in the hierarchy. If the returned site
code indicates that the client is roaming to another site, then SMS
queries Active Directory for the management point in that site. SMS
then queries the returned management point for distribution points with
the necessary package source files within that site. If none of the
returned distribution points have the necessary package source files,
the client reverts to its assigned site. To find distribution points
within the client's assigned site, SMS queries Active Directory for the
management point in the assigned site, and then queries the returned
management point for distribution points that have the necessary
package source files.

To get a better feel for how DPs are located, I suggest that you get

and look at the one called AdvCliLocatingDP.pdf.

Casey
