I received a reply last night from the partner group, that got me thinking.
I added the LOCAL SERVICE, NETWORK SERVICE, and SYSTEM accounts to the
<machinename>\Administrator's group and rebooted, which seemed to correct
the problem and allow me to install the SMS client successfully. What are
the security implications (if any) of adding those accounts to the local
administrator's group. I'm sure there has to be something.
I told partner support that the problem was also corrected if I removed the
machine from the domain and readded it, but that's not a realistic option.
The partner resource suggested that I run netdom /reset on my affected
workstation to see if that will do the trick. I'm going to try it with
another test machine that's experiencing the same problems and will report
back.
