Hi, Ed,
When you create a package, SMS lets you choose on a package-by-package basis
if you want to get source files at all, and if so, where to get them from.
The source files do not need to live on the site server - you can create a
share anywhere on the network and point SMS there. The online Help has a
good description of what the compressed option does:
"Use a compressed copy of the source directory
SMS will create a compressed version of the source files on the site server.
When you specify additional or refresh distribution points for the package,
the compressed version will be decompressed and copied to the distribution
points, instead of being copied directly from the original source folder.
Use this option if the source files might be removed from the specified path
(for example, if the source files are on a CD). If you select this option
and then specify Update All Distribution Points in the Manage Distribution
Points Wizard, a new version of the compressed copy is created from the
specified source folder.
A compressed version of the source folder is always created and used when
the package is sent to distribution points in child sites."
Assuming you have another computer on your network with lots of disk space
(I think it can even be a desktop OS like XP), dump your source there and
let SMS pull from there. More network traffic for package creation and
update, but less disk space on the site server. If bandwidth is a concern,
pull the files from CD adn let SMS make a compessed copy. In the sitewide
settings, you can tell SMS where on the site server to keep the compressed
copies.
Hope that helps.
