Distribution Point directory structure question

I am a little confused about how to configure a DP. I have a SMS Site Server
that performs all SMS roles. I knew that the DP would require a lot of disk
space so during initial configuration, I created a new server share named
Packages$ on my site server which pointed to a drive with plenty of space.
Within that share, I created a directory, PKGSources and another SMSPKG, was
either created for me or created for me, I can't recall. Now the PKGSources
directory, as you can imagine, holds all managed source files, each
application in it's own folder. When I create a package, I list PKGSources
as the source directory. When the packages are created, they are created in
the SMSPKG directory. Now, when I look at the folder contents of these two
directories, they appear to be identical. So, I am using double the space
that I would normally need. This seems like an aweful waste of resources.
Additionally, I am not clear on the use of compressed source. When I did
choose that for one package, another share was created on the root drive that
holds the server share named SMSPKG. This new share held another copy of the
package.
What it comes down to is that I need to know if how I have my system
configured is the most efficient, given that one machine, with multiple disks
is supporting all SMS roles. What I would like to know is what should this
configuration look like, what are the correct sharing and security settings?
To recap, here is my current structure:
Server
C:\SMS
D:\Packages$ (shared) Share perm: Everyone - Full, Security perm: Admin -
Full, Users - Read
D:\SMSPKG (generated share) Share name: SMS_CPSD$ Share perm: Everyone -
Full, Security perm: Admin - Full, SMS_SiteSystemToSiteServerConnection_IEG -
Read
D:\Packages$\PKGSources Security perm: Admin - Full, Users - Read
D:\Packages$\SMSPKG Security perm: Admin - Full, Users - Read
D:\Packages$\PKGSources\Package01
D:\Packages$\SMSPKG\Package01
etc.
Is this the most efficient use of resources? Are these the required shares
and sec settings? I would appreciate hearing from others regarding how they
are doing it.
Thanks,
Ed
