Thank you for your update.
UpdateCatalog is a new feature in SMS2003SP1, first I would like to explain
this feature in more detail for you.
The problem happened while doing patch preapprovals. Patch preapprovals is
a feature that only supported in the SMS 2003 SP1 version. The design of
this feature is to pre-populate the database with new updates which allows
faster patch approvals since you don't have to scan and wait for inventory
to return before you can approve updates. In the previous version of SMS
2003, the SMS site server cannot know the new update until the
scanwrapper.exe had been run on the client computer and the hardware
inventory reported the result back to the SMS site server. Only after that,
the SMS site server can know the available new updates based on the
mssecure.cab that SyncXML.exe had downloaded.
The 'pre-approved' feature add a step during the process of the
SyncXML.exe. After the SyncXML.exe had downloaded the mssecure.cab file,
'pre-approved' feature will call the UpdataCatalog.exe to insert the new
updates into the SQL DB directly.
By this way, the SMS site server can know available new updates
immedicately with no need to wait for the scanwrapper.exe to run on the
client computers.
This feature allow a faster patch approvals.UpdateCatalog: failed is not a
cirtical error, you still can get the updates in the DB after the inventory
had been run on the client computers.
Now let us come to your issue.
This issue is because there is no user account is logged on while running
the SyncXML.exe
By this way, the SyncXML will be run under the system context. In this
situation, SyncXML will not update WMI.
In order to resolve this issue, you must set the SyncXML.exe to run with
user right.
However just as I had mentioned in the previous, .UpdateCatalog: failed is
not a cirtical error, you still can get the updates in the DB after the
inventory had been run on the client computers. So if you do not want to
set it run with user right, it will aslo be ok.
