Make sure the sms client agents are starting up properly when using the vpn
connection before you try wasting your time connecting to that machine.
Also, before making the connection run some simple tests like ping,
pathping, ping with the -a switch, etc to see what the results are. Try
mapping to the admin share of that system as well. All these tests may
produce a result that could lead you to the root cause of the problem
without beating your head against the wall assuming SMS isn't working. If
you are using SMS 2003 with advanced clients look into your roaming boundary
settings as well.
