Installed app misbehaves when SMS runs MSI

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

My name is Andrew Good and I work at the University of Plymouth in the
UK. I am currently repackaging items of software (using AdminStudio
5.02 and WinInstall LE 8.0) and deploying them (using SMS 2.0
Administrator) to workstations around the University. These
workstations run Windows XP Professional.

I wondering if any readers of this newsgroup can help me with a
problem which, for three weeks, has been baffling not just myself but
colleagues with more extensive experience of SMS than I have.

The problem concerns Iolis, a teaching package for Law students. I
have repackaged the product, creating an MSI file which installs fine
when I log in with Administrator rights; and when I subsequently log
in as a student user to run the installed application, it starts up
straight away and runs fine. So far, so good.

The problem arises when I use SMS Administrator to install the product
from the MSI. The installation appears to proceed okay, but when I
log in as a student and run the application, Windows Installer
_starts_up_again_ and makes further changes prior to starting the
application.

I am perplexed by this behavior. Why should it behave differently
when the MSI is run using SMS? And how can I persuade SMS to install
the application in the same way as it does directly from the MSI?

I would be grateful for any help or advice anyone can give me.

Best regards,

Andrew Good
