You can use a server locator point and publish that and your MP in WINS to
allow clients to find boundaries and servers if you choose not to use AD.
The difference is that AD provides secure storage for SMS configuration data
that advanced clients need to locate servers and trust them.
The schema extensions are minor and the amount of data stored in AD is very
small, think of it as similar to publishing a your printers in AD so
machines can find them.
