Mary/Rob/Ed/GbH: if no one believes users' bug reports, they never get
tested, and the bugs remain. Sure there's 95% user error, but what's
beta-testing for, anyway? FYI if you want the original question, just click

Now, back on topic: please consult Publisher's help topic "Troubleshoot
pages and page numbers for print publications in Publisher". The second
expandable subtopic reads as follows:

1. On the Insert menu, click Page Numbers.

2. Clear the "Show page number on first page" check box.

This applies to sections too. Would you like step-by-steps? OK, here goes:

1. Open http://home.comcast.net/~robynleesmith/DancingFairies.pub
2. Pull down View / Master Page -- there's only one facing master with
duplicate headers and alternate-side page numbers in the footers.
3. For each page in the page sorter, click it, pull down the View menu,
notice that Ignore Master Page is cleared, and close the View menu.
4. Right-click page 1 in the page sorter, and choose Insert Section --
notice that the "Show headers and footers on the first page of this section"
checkbox is cleared.
5. Click Cancel to return to page 1 -- H/F's do not show up.
6. Pull down File / Print Preview -- page 1's H/F's show up.
7. Right-click page 1 in the page sorter, choose Insert Section, and check
"Show headers and footers on the first page of this section".
8. Click OK -- page 1's H/F's now show up.
9. Pull down File / Print Preview -- page 1's H/F's show up.
10. Click on page 4 and repeat steps 6-9.

Conclusion: In this simple little file, with one master page which is never
ignored, the two sections' "Show headers and footers on the first page of
this section" checkboxes are cleared. The headers and footers of pages 1 and
4, the first pages of the two sections, are correctly shown or hidden
according to those checkboxes in normal display mode.

However they incorrectly show up in both the print preview and any printout.
Unlike the normal display, they ignore the cleared state of both sections'
"Show headers and footers on the first page of this section" checkboxes.

The definition of WYSIWYG is that display and printout match, and in this
case they do not. This is 100% reproducible.

This is a *BUG*.

will print, you cannot have several objects and expect only the footer or header
will print unless the objects are in the same text box. This is why two Master

It makes no difference what color your stock is...on the screen it is white.

involving the white rectangle -- what if your publication's paper isn't

Never mind -- my point is, the single-master, two-section method I used,
where each section's "show H/F's on the first page" checkbox is UNchecked,
works on the screen, but not the printer. That's not WYSIWYG, and that's a
*BUG*. Fine, I can work around it, but I also want to report this *BUG* for
the benefit of others doing more serious work -- that's what a bug report is
for, and that's why I wrote the subject line as such.

I can't believe it's so hard to report bugs to Microsoft, but I've reported
this *BUG* twice at the feedback link you gave me, and I can't find either
report anywhere to give Rob Giordano the link. I have to assume this *BUG*
exists in 2007 and 2010, but I don't have either one. If you have them, and
since you've taken the trouble to look at my pub, would you kindly see if
display matches printout in each, and then would you report this *BUG* so Rob
can find it?
