I've accidentally erased my memory card or deleted a file (that was
on the hard drive) and used a file restore program to find it. I
shouldn't have called it system restore, you are right, that is what
restores a previous setting. I mean the programs you can download and
run and it brings up what's on the drive you are looking for the
deleted file on. Photo recovery (or file recovery).
As I said, I used it on my camera's memory card in a USB card reader
after I deleted something I still wanted to take off. It took a long
time, but brought up every file on the card, even though I had erased
it and it said (on the camera) the card had no images on it.
Deleting and erasing just take the name off but the file is still
there, unless the space has been reused.
Thanks for clearing that up.

Just to clarify...the file described by the OP was
overwritten by saving a different version with the
same name...and would not be recoverable.

For recovering files that have been deleted...the
following freebie might be worth a try.

Yes.
it's always good to make things clear for those who might be searching the
archives.
I tend to get sidetracked (LOL)
The person asked about renaming a file and saving it and if the original
one was now gone and it is.
