Re: Hyperlinks

Hello Spike,

I corrected the matter as stated below and still the link doesn't work, so
I've got a little time now if you can assist me. Our radio broadcast went
out yesterday directing people to the site to download from the link, so I
hope to get it up and working asap.

Thanks,
Bob

That is because the file in your downloads folder is named
"kos_registration_form.pdf.pdf"
You need to replace it with "kos_registration_form.pdf"

Hi Spike,

I didn't see that, but I hate to tell you that it's still not working.

I'm going to be out this evening, but if I can long in I will.

I appreciate your efforts. Now you see why I am pulling hair.

Look at the line above and notice how you named the file Take the last
".pdf" off of the file and reload it to the downloads folder and it will
work. Then
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/downloads/kos_registration_form.pdf
will bring up the file. Get this working then we will move on with some
more of your links.

Example from your web site: F:\My Web Sites\BMBC Home3\prayer_list.doc
Notice the F:\ That is pointing to your hard drive. Needs to be
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/downloads/prayer_list.doc (and I said in
another post, look at making the document a pdf file so it can be read by
all).

Hang in there, 1 at a time and you will be happy.

Good Afternoon Team,

Well, I almost expected the results I got. The file doesn't open.
I've
deleted all the excess, created the links as you said.

I will have to leave for now, but is there some other way I can provide
info
for you to look futher into this. I don't know what to do.

Without knowing the level of expertise of the OP, it is difficult for
me
to
come up with the best words as not to belittle the persons knowledge
but
yet
get them on the right track. I detest people that talk down to others
in
need. I am not saying that YOU do that. Your detailed instructions
are
among the best on the forum. Bottom line, get the web site up and
running
with as many or as few words as necessary !!

Hey terse...I like your description...just call me verbose...or
wordy
for
short ;-).

But I will have you know that the answer to his original question
was
written in 6 lines...not bad...I am getting better.

The problem came when I looked at his web directory and I could find
no
succinct way to describe what he was doing...oh well. Short or
long...hopefully the posters will let us know if they need more
clarification.

JUMP IN, JUMP IN the water's fine ....
Thanks for the help. I usually start out with relative links
(easier)
but you probably have a better solution with the absolute links. I
can
always depend on Verbose David to bail out Terse Spike :)

If I may jump in... I think it might be easier for you if you
write
an
'absolute link' to your pdf file. 'Relative links' can be
confusing
and
writing the full path to the files can make things more clear.

After you upload the subfolder 'downloads' to your root directory
or
root folder and upload the 'kos_registration_form.pdf' file to the
'downloads' folder, then the link to that file will be:

www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/downloads/kos_registration_form.pdf
or
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/downloads/kos_registration_form.pdf

I would also point out that when you go to your website via
'www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org' , you go to
www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/index.htm .
Then when you click the 'About Us' link on your home page, it will
take
you to http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/index_files/Page380.htm . In
other
words it takes you to the 'index_files" folder on our host and
finds
the
'Page380.htm' file. Note that all your other pages are also in the
'index_files' folder. When you click any of the navbar buttons on
your
default home page then it will take you to the file within the
index_files folder...it does not take you to the other subfolders
in
your root directory. You do not need the other subfolders.

To explain further, here is a link to your 'Reflections_files"
folder:
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/Reflections_files/
You will notice that you get a listing of the files in that folder
because there is not default .htm file. But now go to this link:
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/Reflections.htm Notice that it is the
same
as http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/index.htm .

You can keep producing your web files as you want, but the reality
is
that a viewer will stay within the files in the 'index_files'
folder
if
they arrive at your site via www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org ...because they
will
start at www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/index.htm and all the links from
that
page will point to the 'index_files' folder...not the other
folders
you
have created. That means that your 'Reflections' page is located
here:
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/index_files/Page1201.htm and again at
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/Reflections_files/Page1201.htm not
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/Reflections.htm as you intended.

If you want custom file names, then go to your main Pub file. Go
to
the
'Reflections' page in your publication > Tools > Web page options
and
under 'Publish to the web" in the 'File name' field type in
'Reflections' without the quote. Now when you publish to the web
and
produce you new web files, Publisher will call that page
'Reflections.htm' instead of 'Page1201.htm'. And the absolute link
to
that page will be
http://www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org/index_files/Reflections.htm . Do this
for
each of your pages in your publication, but do not leave spaces.
For
the
About us page use either 'AboutUs.htm' or 'About_us.htm' and
perhaps
avoid upper case altogether and just call the file 'aboutus.htm'.
Just
be consistent.

I hope I haven't confused you further, but it was obvious that you
needed to understand how to write absolute links to your files and
your
web pages, and that also meant that I had to discuss how you have
organized your web directory. You simply do not need all those
other
subdirectories/subfolders nor are they really accomplishing what
you
wanted them to accomplish. The good news is that now you know how
to
write the link to the pdf file and any other pdf file that you put
into
the 'downloads' folder. Clear as mud now? <g>

Hi Spike,

I read what you are saying, but I'm not so certain how to make it
happen.
I've created a folder (downloads) and put the
"kos_registration_form.pdf) in
it. Now when I make the link "downloads", what is to go in front
of
the
"downloads/kos_registration_form.pdf" in the address line,
because
right now
it is in a folder on my "f" drive?

As I stated before, I am confused as to how things work now.

My website address is: www.bmbc-lugoffsc.org
The root folder is: BMBC Home3
My web page files are: index_files, About Us_files,
Calendar_files,
Contact
Us_files, Gallery_files, Health_files, Ministrie_files,
Products_files,
Reflections_files and the new folder - downloads

Each of the listed folders above have the web pages in them with
all
the
files/images for each.
For example: Page 380 is a HTML doc that opens the web page About
Us
when
you click on it. So this is where I get really confused, because
I
don't
know how to create a link to go to another web page or a doc.

I hope this makes sense to you.

"Spike" wrote:

To link text to a document
Highlight the text
Right click on the highlighted text
Select Hyperlink
In the address bar at the bottom of the window enter the
location
and
the
name of the document

Example: /downloads/my_document.pdf

The file my_documents.pdf is in the folder downloads in the root
directory
on the server

To create a link to other pages follow the same as above but
instead
of
entering an address select the icon on the left of the window
"Place
in this
document" and select the page you wish to link to.

I have upgraded to Publisher 2007 and am having a hard time
wih
the
hyperlinks. I've looked at the Help regarding this topic, and
even
proceeded
to follow the instructions given, but the links don't work. I
need
to
know
how to link text to documents and to create links to other
pages
in
.
