Re: C-Drive stem folders with duplicate website info???

Spike:
I created a sub-folder in my new main folder (HOA WEBSITE) for my .pub file,
called, "downloads."
Inside of "downloads," I placed copies of <<all four>> of my .pdf files.
The first hyperlink to the bylaws .pdf file is shown as:
http://www.lcn-hoa.com/downloads/bylaws_LCNII_6.pdf
The file name of the same file in the sub-folder "downloads," is named:
bylaws_LCNII_6.pdf
When I double-clicked on the new "index.htm" file inside of HOA WEBSITE, up
comes a copy of the website as it will look when published.
Everything works fine, except the .pdf files
When I click on any of them, I get the following message:
You are the owner of this web site and you have not uploaded (or incorrectly
uploaded) your web site. For information on uploading your web site using FTP
client software or web design software, click here for FTP Upload Information.
QUESTION: Maybe <<placement>> of the new "HOA WEBSITE" and its sub-folder
"downloads" on my C-Drive stem is causing the problem?? Maybe this new main
folder and the sub-folder should be placed below:
Computer
Local Disk (C:)
DVD RW Drive (D:)
Removable Disk (E:), and so on?
It is now below "Desktop," which is at the top of "My Computer" stem, and
among the folders for "Thom Sepic," which includes such folders as .java;
AppData; Application Data; Contacts; Desktop; Documents; Downloads;
Favorites; HOA WEBSITE (with the sub-folder, downloads); Links, etc.
Otherwise, I am at a loss as to why I can see all the "new" changes I have
made to my .pub file for the website when published, except the four .pdf
files.
Best, Thomboy

Looking over your site it appears that you have the publisher program
publishing all you web files to one directory, I do not see the
"index_files" directory being used and that is OK. Your site looks good and
is working fine as far as I can see.
To clear things up I have a few suggestions:
1. Delete all the htm files that you created on your computer hard drive
(so you don’t get an old one accidently)
2. Create a new folder on your hard drive (any name will do) let's call it
HOA for now
3. Open your pub file using publisher and modify the links for your PDF
files to read "http://www.lcn-hoa.com/downloads/XXX.pdf" without the quotes.
XXX will be different for each PDF file (remember NO spaces please)
4. Using "Publish to the web", publish you files to the new folder HOA
5. Create a sub folder to HOA (any name will do) let's call it "downloads"
for now without the quotes
6. Rename you PDF files to match your links and place them in the DOWNLOADS
folder
7. Go back to the HOA folder. Double click on the index.htm file. This
should bring up the web site on your browser. Go through your site and
check it out. Try the PDF files. If all works the way you want got to step
8. (if not get back here and we will figure it out)
8. Using filezilla, log onto your server. Create a folder on the server in
the root directory named "downloads" without the quotes and all lower case
letters.
9. Using filezilla, transfer the files in the HOA folder on your hard drive
to the root directory on the server
10. Using filezilla, transfer the PDF files form the DOWNLOADS folder on
your computer to the downloads folder on the server.
AND don't feel that you are dense as you are asking GOOD questions. We all
started out that way and with a little help we got better as you will too
soon.

Spike, when I first up loaded them to my website, using FileZilla, a
friend
who uses HTML for all his webdesign and knows nothing about Publisher, got
behind the Publisher files, and tweaked them using HTML, and viola, the
four
.pdf files uploaded perfectly. We knew at the time that what he did was
not
protocol, but in a bind, one accepts anything that works!
There was no problem, until I had to go back and update the website by
myself, and then the message from IE you cite below appeared. You saw
what I
saw that the file was on my own hard drive.
Unfotunately, my friend has moved away, and I am NOW on my own.
I am actually beginning from ground zero when it comes to posting .pdf
files
on my Publisher driven website. I did read David's note at MSMVPS.COM
titled, "Including external files in a Pullisher web," which indirectly
includes much of what you are saying, but it is directed at users of Pub
2000
when they upgrade to 2002 or 2003.
Not to muddy the water, but I have or Publisher has created some folders
on
my C drive that seem to include the index.htm and index_files, and when my
friend earlier got involved in moving the four .pdf files to my Publisher
website, he side stepped the normal step by step process for uploading
files
to my host site, and while everything worked, and we were up and running,
I
remain confused as to why I have two folders now, each with the same data.
The two folders on the stem of my C-drive are shown as: "www.lcn-hoa.com"
and ftp.lcn-hoa.com" and both have the two main .pub files ("index_file"
and
my "index.htm") and they also include "_db_backups; aspnet_client; and
stats." Both may be essential when I use FileZilla to move my two .pub
files
to my website, but if so, which one should I save the index_files &
index.htm
to when I click on "Publish to the web" before I upgrade my website?
CAN YOU PLEASE LOOK BELOW FOR MY ANSWERS OR QUESTIONS RELATED TO YOUR
REPLY?

This is the link I see on your site for one of your pdf's
\\thomoffice\ActiveFoldrs\HOA - Website Files\index_files\CCR LCNII
157-219_6.pdf
The problem here is the link above that is on your web page
It should be http://www.lcn-hoa.com/XXX.pdf (if the XXX.pdf is in the
root
directory)
Suggestion: When you name pdf files omit the spaces in the name of the
files.
When you load the pdf files to your server, place
them
in a directory of their own such as downloads to keep them where they are
easy to locate and maintain. The new link then would be:
http://www.lcn-hoa.com/downloads/XXX.pdf
OK, I WILL ASSUME THAT I NEED TO CREATE A FOLDER ON MY C-DRIVE, TITLED,
"DOWNLOADS FOR WEBSITE," INTO WHICH I SHOULD SAVE A COPY OF ALL FOUR .PDF
FILES--WITHOUT SPACES. OR, ARE YOU TELLING ME TO SAVE THE FOUR .PDF FILES
TO
ONE OF THE MYSTERIOUS TWO FOLDERS MENTIONED ABOVE BEGINNING WITH FTP. OR
WWW.?
IF SO, THEN THIS BECOMES MUCH CLEARER.
SORRY FOR SOUNDING SO DENSE, BUT HAVING MY FRIEND HELP ME, ACTUALLY
CONFUSED
ME MORE WHEN I CAME BACK TO MOVE THE .PDF FILES CORRECTLY.
I looked for your pdf's in the root directory but did not find them.
Where
did you up load them to?
SEE ABOVE PLEASE,
THANKS, THOMBOY

Hi David:
I am back again.
We talked briefly about my desktop running Windows Vista Ultra with IE
8,
and my laptop running Windows XP with IE 7.
You suggested uninstalling IE 8 on my desktop, and going back to IE 7,
so
there would be fewer problems when I moved my .pub file for my website
(http://www.lcn-hoa.com) to my laptop.
Does it make any sense to load Office 2007 on my laptop, replacing
Office
2003 to also remove another hurdle to jump?
In keeping with that question, and only because I have an unopened and
new
copy of Windows Vista Home Premium yet to load onto my laptop, would it
make
any sense to install the Vista Premium on my laptop so there is more
continuity between my desktop and my laptop?
I have a Core 2 cpu @ 2.00 GHz, plus .99GB of RAM on my laptop, barely
enough for Windows Vista Home Premium to run effecitvely.
Any thoughts?
Thomboy
P.S. I have another Publisher Question about using .pdf files on a
publisher webpage, and how to make it work? I have read and reread the
Office Publisher file, "Save a file in PDF Format," and am still not
sure
how
to make this happen.
The nine steps in the Office Pub file make it sound very easy, but I
cannot
make it work. If you take a quick look at my website, mentioned above,
and
click on the page titled, "C&Rs and Legal" and then click on any of the
links, you get a message that says that IE cannot display this page.

Well, I am glad you found the solution, though it be a bit circuitous.

David, after all my and your work on this problem, it turned out to
be
a
very
simple FileZilla problem. I was using the name of the host as
GoDaddy,
when
what was needed was my website address. Host to me does not mean
the
address
of my website, but logic was not needed.
The site is back up, and even though I would love to say that we
both,
by
putting our heads together, solved the problem it was a simple
naming
issue.
At least, and I mean this, your knowledge will come in very handy
when
I
attempt, to transfer the .pub file from my desktop onto my laptop.
You know David, I tried to put the index_files and the index.htm
files
on
my
desktop, and instead of two files, everything in the index_file was
loaded
onto my desktop--all the photos, the .tif files, etc., and while
deleting
all
of this, I was laughing out loud.
I then loaded the index_files into a folder, and pointed at this
folder
when
I opened FileZilla, and when I attempted to drag the two files
(index_files &
index.htm) to the right side of the FileZilla screen, let me gibe
you
another
brain f _ _ t. As soon as I put in the correct host name, user
name,
password, and port, all the information I wanted to drag to the
right
side
of
the screen was already there.
Go figure? How did this happen?
Try as I may to figure what made this all happen, all I can say is
LUCK.
But, again, David, I am very grateful you were there to help me,
because I
want to come back to this "your' well again when I try to move the
.pub
file
from desktop to laptop.
I HOPE THIS IS OK?????
Many thanks.

Will do! Sometimes the road to higher ground takes some walking
in
the
valleys, but that is the value of experience -- the best teacher.
Isn't it great that your experiences can help so many people in
need?
I also look for ways to help people around me, not with
technology,
but
help
just the same. There is no better feeling than to see someone
smile
when
they have been trying to solve a problem for days, months, or
even
years
that
you can help them overcome with a few suggestions. It smooths
out
