Pretty soon we will need roadmaps to find our replies to each other :-)

I will put 2 plusses in front of and following my repies to your comments in
brackets { }.

My comments are { bracketed after each STEP }

Here are my thoughts about your ten suggested steps......

STEP 1. {OK No need to delete at this time}

++If I don't delete some of the prior .htm files, isn't there a chance that
when I try to upload the .pub files (index_files & index.htm) some of the old
index_files & index.htm files might load instead of the newer ones? I am
beginning to sound like someone who believes in reincarnation!! ++

As you can see, deleting all the .htm files on my C-Drive is a rather
daunting task, and because of the many locations of those .htm files, I am
not ready yet to follow your first suggestion, "delete all the .htm files
that you created on your compuer hard drive (so you don't get an old one
accidently)."

STEP 2. { any name will work, make it easy on yourself }

++ Right now, nothing seems easy, but rest assured, I will be in better
shape tomorrow ++

You want me to create a new folder called, "HOA"

Remember that I have several files and folders with the HOA title, but
with
other wording, so this may work, but knowing me, I will get confused :-)

STEP 3. { the PDF itself will be named bylaws_LCNII_6.pdf The
hyperlink to the PDF will be
http://www.lcn-hoa.com/downloads/bylaws_LCNII_6.pdf }

++ OK, thanks, I do understand this one ++

As you can see from the above listing, the .pdf files don't have any
spaces
between their letters and numbers ((#1 = "bylaws_LCNII_6.pdf"). I think
you
are telling me that the first .pdf file should look like:

http://www.lcn-hoa.com/downloads/bylaws_LCNII_6.pdf"; (without the quotes)?

STEP 4: { OK }

++ Thanks, I am making some progress, and it is good to know that I am
beginning to understand you ++

I will Publish to the Web and place the files in the New "HOA" folder.

STEP 5: { OK open the main folder and right click in the folder
and select new folder and name it downloads }

++ OK, Spike, I remember now what to do, and thanks for reminding me ++

I will create a sub-folder, called, "DOWNLOADS."

QUESTION: I guess I am tired, but how does one create a sub-folder inside
of the main HOA folder?

STEP 6: { correct copy paste }

++ Got it ++

I will place my .pdf files into the "DOWNLOADS" folder.

QUESTION: I assume here you are talking about a mere copy and paste of
the
four .pdf files into the DOWNLOADS folder?

STEP 7: { this is an easy to preview the files and test the links
before you send them to the server }

++ Like I said this is a new one, but it sounds like a foolproof way to
check the site before I upload it using FileZilla ++

++ Again, thanks for checking back and for reading the long list of C-Drive
stem information, before commenting. I am still frustrated not knowing what
to cut, or what to redo, or do over. I really hope that when we finish I can
honestly say that I finally know what to do. ++

This step is brand new for me. I never knew that clicking on the
index.htm
file would bring up a copy of my website, and that I could click on the
.pdf
files to see if they will load for viewing.

OK, I think I better stop for today, because my head is getting too tired,
after being on a roof with 90 degree temps rolling paint for five hours.

More later, Thomboy

Looking over your site it appears that you have the publisher program
publishing all you web files to one directory, I do not see the
"index_files" directory being used and that is OK. Your site looks good
and
is working fine as far as I can see.

To clear things up I have a few suggestions:

1. Delete all the htm files that you created on your computer hard drive
(so you don’t get an old one accidently)
2. Create a new folder on your hard drive (any name will do) let's call
it
HOA for now
3. Open your pub file using publisher and modify the links for your PDF
files to read "http://www.lcn-hoa.com/downloads/XXX.pdf"; without the
quotes.
XXX will be different for each PDF file (remember NO spaces please)
4. Using "Publish to the web", publish you files to the new folder HOA
5. Create a sub folder to HOA (any name will do) let's call it
"downloads"
for now without the quotes
6. Rename you PDF files to match your links and place them in the
DOWNLOADS
folder
7. Go back to the HOA folder. Double click on the index.htm file. This
should bring up the web site on your browser. Go through your site and
check it out. Try the PDF files. If all works the way you want got to
step
8. (if not get back here and we will figure it out)
8. Using filezilla, log onto your server. Create a folder on the server
in
the root directory named "downloads" without the quotes and all lower
case
letters.
9. Using filezilla, transfer the files in the HOA folder on your hard
drive
to the root directory on the server
10. Using filezilla, transfer the PDF files form the DOWNLOADS folder on
your computer to the downloads folder on the server.

AND don't feel that you are dense as you are asking GOOD questions. We
all
started out that way and with a little help we got better as you will too
soon.

Spike, when I first up loaded them to my website, using FileZilla, a
friend
who uses HTML for all his webdesign and knows nothing about Publisher,
got
behind the Publisher files, and tweaked them using HTML, and viola, the
four
.pdf files uploaded perfectly. We knew at the time that what he did
was
not
protocol, but in a bind, one accepts anything that works!

There was no problem, until I had to go back and update the website by
myself, and then the message from IE you cite below appeared. You saw
what I
saw that the file was on my own hard drive.

Unfotunately, my friend has moved away, and I am NOW on my own.

I am actually beginning from ground zero when it comes to posting .pdf
files
on my Publisher driven website. I did read David's note at MSMVPS.COM
titled, "Including external files in a Pullisher web," which indirectly
includes much of what you are saying, but it is directed at users of
Pub
2000
when they upgrade to 2002 or 2003.

Not to muddy the water, but I have or Publisher has created some
folders
on
my C drive that seem to include the index.htm and index_files, and when
my
friend earlier got involved in moving the four .pdf files to my
Publisher
website, he side stepped the normal step by step process for uploading
files
to my host site, and while everything worked, and we were up and
running,
I
remain confused as to why I have two folders now, each with the same
data.

The two folders on the stem of my C-drive are shown as:
and ftp.lcn-hoa.com" and both have the two main .pub files
("index_file"
and
my "index.htm") and they also include "_db_backups; aspnet_client; and
stats." Both may be essential when I use FileZilla to move my two .pub
files
to my website, but if so, which one should I save the index_files &
index.htm
to when I click on "Publish to the web" before I upgrade my website?

CAN YOU PLEASE LOOK BELOW FOR MY ANSWERS OR QUESTIONS RELATED TO YOUR
REPLY?

This is the link I see on your site for one of your pdf's

\\thomoffice\ActiveFoldrs\HOA - Website Files\index_files\CCR LCNII
157-219_6.pdf

The problem here is the link above that is on your web page

It should be http://www.lcn-hoa.com/XXX.pdf (if the XXX.pdf is in
the
root
directory)

Suggestion: When you name pdf files omit the spaces in the name of
the
files.
When you load the pdf files to your server, place
them
in a directory of their own such as downloads to keep them where they
are
easy to locate and maintain. The new link then would be:
http://www.lcn-hoa.com/downloads/XXX.pdf

OK, I WILL ASSUME THAT I NEED TO CREATE A FOLDER ON MY C-DRIVE, TITLED,
"DOWNLOADS FOR WEBSITE," INTO WHICH I SHOULD SAVE A COPY OF ALL FOUR
.PDF
FILES--WITHOUT SPACES. OR, ARE YOU TELLING ME TO SAVE THE FOUR .PDF
FILES
TO
ONE OF THE MYSTERIOUS TWO FOLDERS MENTIONED ABOVE BEGINNING WITH FTP.
OR
WWW.?

IF SO, THEN THIS BECOMES MUCH CLEARER.

SORRY FOR SOUNDING SO DENSE, BUT HAVING MY FRIEND HELP ME, ACTUALLY
CONFUSED
ME MORE WHEN I CAME BACK TO MOVE THE .PDF FILES CORRECTLY.

I looked for your pdf's in the root directory but did not find them.
Where
did you up load them to?

SEE ABOVE PLEASE,

THANKS, THOMBOY

Hi David:

I am back again.

We talked briefly about my desktop running Windows Vista Ultra with
IE
8,
and my laptop running Windows XP with IE 7.

You suggested uninstalling IE 8 on my desktop, and going back to IE
7,
so
there would be fewer problems when I moved my .pub file for my
website
(http://www.lcn-hoa.com) to my laptop.

Does it make any sense to load Office 2007 on my laptop, replacing
Office
2003 to also remove another hurdle to jump?

In keeping with that question, and only because I have an unopened
and
new
copy of Windows Vista Home Premium yet to load onto my laptop, would
it
make
any sense to install the Vista Premium on my laptop so there is more
continuity between my desktop and my laptop?

I have a Core 2 cpu @ 2.00 GHz, plus .99GB of RAM on my laptop,
barely
enough for Windows Vista Home Premium to run effecitvely.

Any thoughts?

Thomboy

P.S. I have another Publisher Question about using .pdf files on a
publisher webpage, and how to make it work? I have read and reread
the
Office Publisher file, "Save a file in PDF Format," and am still not
sure
how
to make this happen.

The nine steps in the Office Pub file make it sound very easy, but I
cannot
make it work. If you take a quick look at my website, mentioned
above,
and
click on the page titled, "C&Rs and Legal" and then click on any of
the
.pdf
links, you get a message that says that IE cannot display this page.
