Hi Thomboy,
Welcome back. I see that Spike has addressed the pdf questions, so I will
comment on the rest.
Until recently I would have probably said that installing Pub 2007 on the
computer where you have Pub 2003 would not be necessary, but today I feel
different. I think it might be a good idea.
Though Pub 2003 and 2007 files are supposed to be interchangeable, I have
read of times where they aren't, and so you would minimize the possibility
of a file conflict.
If you have been reading through the posts of this group you will find
another reason. If you view a Pub 2003 and 2007 web in IE8, any design
elements that are grouped together will not render. So if you selected two
or more design elements on any of your pages, grouped them (Arrange > group)
in order to drag them around or keep their spacing, then those items will
not render, and you have to ungroup them. But more importantly in your case,
Publisher wizard built navbars also don't render, because they are made up
of sometimes three different elements for each button, and all those
elements are grouped together, and thus they don't render. We may have
discussed all of this before. Anyway, the advantage to putting Pub 2007 on
both machines is that it *sounds like* MSFT is going to incorporate a 'fix'
for this grouping problem in the Office 2007 SP2 which is due out by the end
of the month. Obviously if they do it would be to your advantage to be using
Pub 2007, as there is a pretty good chance that no fix will be forthcoming
for Pub 2003, and you will have to use some workarounds. And even if the SP2
does not fix it, I believe that MSFT will eventually fix it, and that fix
might only be available for Pub 2007.
Now, knowing I risk creating a problem for you, could install Pub 2007 and
keep Pub 2003. You just have to do a custom install. I won't belabor this as
it might not be worth the potential problems you might create for yourself.
I currently have 2000, 2003 and 2007 installed on this machine...but I need
them to test and work out solutions for this group.
And one more note. You can legally install one copy of Pub 2007 on a desktop
and a laptop. You might not need to use that new copy of Office unless you
want to.
As per installing the different version of Vista...I really don't know. I
have avoided Vista thus far and hope to skip it all together, and will stay
with XP as long as possible. Somehow I doubt that the upgrade will do any
good...will offer you any advantage, especially since you are only running 1
gig of RAM. But as I said, I really don't know. You might Google the
differences between the two versions and if one offers something the other
doesn't then maybe, I suppose. But I think the 'core' of Vista is the same
and your Pub files should not be affected one way or the other.
Good luck.

Hi David:
I am back again.
We talked briefly about my desktop running Windows Vista Ultra with IE 8,
and my laptop running Windows XP with IE 7.
You suggested uninstalling IE 8 on my desktop, and going back to IE 7, so
there would be fewer problems when I moved my .pub file for my website
(http://www.lcn-hoa.com) to my laptop.
Does it make any sense to load Office 2007 on my laptop, replacing Office
2003 to also remove another hurdle to jump?
In keeping with that question, and only because I have an unopened and new
copy of Windows Vista Home Premium yet to load onto my laptop, would it
make
any sense to install the Vista Premium on my laptop so there is more
continuity between my desktop and my laptop?
I have a Core 2 cpu @ 2.00 GHz, plus .99GB of RAM on my laptop, barely
enough for Windows Vista Home Premium to run effecitvely.
Any thoughts?
Thomboy
P.S. I have another Publisher Question about using .pdf files on a
publisher webpage, and how to make it work? I have read and reread the
Office Publisher file, "Save a file in PDF Format," and am still not sure
how
to make this happen.
The nine steps in the Office Pub file make it sound very easy, but I
cannot
make it work. If you take a quick look at my website, mentioned above,
and
click on the page titled, "C&Rs and Legal" and then click on any of the
links, you get a message that says that IE cannot display this page.

David, after all my and your work on this problem, it turned out to be
a
very
simple FileZilla problem. I was using the name of the host as GoDaddy,
when
what was needed was my website address. Host to me does not mean the
address
of my website, but logic was not needed.
The site is back up, and even though I would love to say that we both,
by
putting our heads together, solved the problem it was a simple naming
issue.
At least, and I mean this, your knowledge will come in very handy when
I
attempt, to transfer the .pub file from my desktop onto my laptop.
You know David, I tried to put the index_files and the index.htm files
on
my
desktop, and instead of two files, everything in the index_file was
loaded
onto my desktop--all the photos, the .tif files, etc., and while
deleting
all
of this, I was laughing out loud.
I then loaded the index_files into a folder, and pointed at this folder
when
I opened FileZilla, and when I attempted to drag the two files
(index_files &
index.htm) to the right side of the FileZilla screen, let me gibe you
another
brain f _ _ t. As soon as I put in the correct host name, user name,
password, and port, all the information I wanted to drag to the right
side
of
the screen was already there.
Go figure? How did this happen?
Try as I may to figure what made this all happen, all I can say is
LUCK.
But, again, David, I am very grateful you were there to help me,
because I
want to come back to this "your' well again when I try to move the .pub
file
from desktop to laptop.
I HOPE THIS IS OK?????
Many thanks.

Thanks Thomboy. But the real satisfaction will be when you post back

say
that your site is up and running again. Even though I won't see your

I will imagine it.

Will do! Sometimes the road to higher ground takes some walking in
the
valleys, but that is the value of experience -- the best teacher.
Isn't it great that your experiences can help so many people in
need?
I also look for ways to help people around me, not with technology,
but
help
just the same. There is no better feeling than to see someone smile
when
they have been trying to solve a problem for days, months, or even
years
that
you can help them overcome with a few suggestions. It smooths out
the
hills
and valleys and makes life more livable.
You done good, Gunga Din.

OK. It sounds like I mixed up which computer you were using, but
the
suggestions about how to Publish to the Web and changing the
options
in
Pub
2003 still apply. Also, the FTP uploading process should be the
same
on
both
computers using FileZilla. There are some other differences between
2003
and
2007 so plan on trying to open your Pub file on the Pub 2003
machine,
publishing the files, and testing against the files you produce
with
2007. I
don't think there will be substantial differences, but you should
do
this
while you still have access to both computers. Also be sure to
backup
your
Pub file before you open it in Pub 2003. Rename it if you have to,
but
make
note somehow that it is your original. Pub 2003 and 2007 files are
supposed
to be interchangeable, but I have read of cases where they weren't
so
you
might as well take a few precautions. I originally feared you were
opening
your html files in Publisher and had not saved the original Pub
file,
and
that would have created a big job for you rebuilding the site.
After
get
everything up and running and before you leave for Washington, you
might
even consider uploading a backup copy of your Pub file to your web
host
for
safe keeping and access if you need it. Just sayn'...
I don't know what files are in the Godaddy 'stats' folder, but
Godaddy
does
need to rebuild/repair your ftp site. Hopefully it will be clear
from
your
request and you will be up and running soon.
You are welcome...good luck and yes, let us know how it works out.

David, Viola, we are now on the same page, and your verbiage has
solved
all
my problems, except for doing some very stupid things. Now,
however, I
can
see that the ftp.lch-hoa.com folder contains GoDaddy files to
make
the
crossover work and to enable my "index_files" and the "index.htm"
folder
to
load at the webhost site, GoDaddy, using FileZilla.
So far all my work has been done using Office 2007 and VISTAr,
but I
expect
to use Office 2003 and Windows XP when I take my laptop back to
Washington
State to keep the website updated.
Answer to your first question, no I cannot log on to my website.
When
I
or
anyone else tries, the following message appears:
------------------------------
The page you tried to access does not exist on this server. This
page
may
not exist due to the following reasons:
1. You are the owner of this web site and you have not uploaded
(or
incorrectly uploaded) your web site. For information on uploading
your
web
site using FTP client software or web design software, click here
for
FTP
Upload Information.
2. The URL that you have entered in your browser is incorrect.
Please
re-enter the URL and try again.
3. The Link that you clicked on incorrectly points to this page.
Please
contact the owner of this web site to inform them of this
situation.
------------------------------
I HAVE ALWAYS USED Vista, AND OFFICE 2007, and this is where I
may
have
"created a 'network place' which was (as you said) both the 'ftp
folder'
and
the 'www folder.' "
This is going to sound crazy, but I only deleted the
"index_files,"
the
"index.htm" file, and the "stats" file from the ftp.lcn-hoa.com
root
directory, and left the others in place, the webhost site went
away.
The
"stats" file must be an essential GoDaddy entry, which is needed
to
keep
the
website working. What I am saying is that all three are GoDaddy
files
are
essential: _db_backups, aspnet_client, and stats, which is the
only
GoDaddy
file I deleted with HOA Website Files (inside of which must have
been
index_files and index.htm). Am I making any sense to you?
Now, back to another of your questions: can you still logon to
your
FTP
site:
ftp.lan-hoa.com with FileZilla? Are those '_db_backups',
'aspnet_client'
and 'stats' folders gone?
MY RESPONSE: I cannot log onto the FTP site, and when I reach
the
FileZilla
screen, I cannot see any of the GoDaddy created files mentioned
in
your
question. So, contacting GoDaddy may be the right fix and to ask
them
to
replace those three files so when I drag the "index_files" and
"index.htm"
onto the right side of the FileZilla screen, they will load
properly,
and
the
website will be up and running again.
Your suggestion follows: You don't need to explain how you
goofed
up,
just
tell them you did and provide them with your domain name, the
user
ID
or
name
and your password. They will reinstall all these default folders
and
files
and you can start fresh.
MY RESPONSE: I plan to do this immediately after I log off from
the
Publisher Office Online website.
Your last suggestion follows: Now I should clarify something.
You
created
a
folder on your computer called "HOA Website Files". This is where
you
directed your Publisher web files (the index.htm file and
index_files
folder). Put that folder either on your Desktop or somewhere you
can
easily
find it. When you upload again, upload *just* the Publisher
webfiles,
*not*
the whole 'HOA Website Files' folder. The index.htm file and
index_files
folder should be uploaded to the same directory and at the same
level
as
the
'_db_backups', 'aspnet_client' and the 'stats' folders.
MY RESPONSE: The only thing in the HOA Website files folder are
the
two
files "index_files" and "index.htm" so highlighting and dragging
them
into
the ftp.lch-hoa.com folder should be OK, but even though I have
examined
the
contents of this folder (HOA Website Files) I cannot be 100% sure
that
there
aren't hidden files.
YOur next suggestion follows: I think you may have been making
another
mistake with Publisher 2003. After you opened your Publisher file
and
were
ready to publish your web files, you said that you did a ""Save a
web
page".
If you do this Publisher 2003 creates what is called 'unfiltered'
or
'rich'
files, that are bloated with Office tags and such. Instead when
you
are
ready
to publish go to File 'Publish to the Web' and direct your files
to
the
'HOA
Website Files' folder on your computer. This will produce
filtered
files
in
both Pub 2003 and 2007. Then using FileZilla upload the index.htm
file
and
the index_files folder to your FTP site: ftp.lan-hoa.com and you
should
.
