Re: relative picture links

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi David,

first of next questions: thank you for your good explanation.

This works good so far, although some new questions rise with the results:

- the results shows all the pictures, but this seems to be a special web
format. For exaple: IE cannot show picture single attributes as usual with
contect menu (right mouse button)
- when I put an hyperlink on a JPG-graphic to another .JPG (better
resolution) , the link doesn't work. The status row of the IE shows the
absolute path (file:\\\c:\temp\...)

thanks
Eugen

Eugen,

I do not speak German, and you do not speak English, but I will try to
explain a few things about how Publisher works, and will hope that it
translates and will help.

1. Always use "Publish to the Web" to export or to produce your web pages.
Do not use "Save As" a web page to export or produce your web pages in Pub
2003. "Save As" produces "rich" html code that is bloated or heavy with MS
Office tags....large files. The page will take a long time to load.
"Publish to the Web" produces "filtered" html code that is lighter and
does not have the MS Office tags. The page will load faster. "Save As" =
big files. "Publish to the Web" = small files.

2. Publisher works different than FrontPage. If you still have FrontPage
it would be best if you used it to produce your web pages. It is better.

3. Open your Publisher publication. Go to Tools > Options > Web tab. You
currently have the option "organize supporting files in a folder" chosen.
When you "Publish to the Web" your images are put in a subfolder
"montana-Dateien" and the path to the image is:
src="montana-Dateien/image007.jpg or:
http://www.vasquez.de/produkte/videostation/montana-Dateien/image007.jpg
If you go to Tools > Options > Web tab and uncheck or do not choose
"organize supporting files in a folder" , then your images and all your
other web pages (*.htm files) are at the same level in the directory as
"montana.htm". The images will be named different. They will include the
"montana". The path to the image is then: src="montana_image007.jpg or:
http://www.vasquez.de/produkte/videostation/montana_image007.jpg

Does not using the option "organize supporting files in a folder" give
you what you want?

4. When you go to Tools > Options > Web tab also uncheck or do not choose
"Rely on VML..." and "Allow PNG...". This will help your pages view in
Internet Explorer and FireFox browsers. It helps cross browser
compatibility.

5. Be sure to compress your images before you upload again. Publisher 2003
and 2007 do not automatically resample and optimize the images for the
web. You should use the compress pictures feature.

Reference: Compress graphics file sizes to create smaller Publisher Web
pages (2003):
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HA011266301033.aspx

I hope my answers help.

Hi David,

it is version 2003 and I use "publish to the web" or "save as" , type
'website' as export method.

(terms are an free translation from german version and may differ)

see the page at www.vasquez.de\produkte/videostation/montana.htm

You should be getting relative links. Which version of Publisher are you
using? Specifically what steps are you taking to create your website
files? What type of uploading protocol are you using? Please provide a
link to your website.

I always get absolute links only, what avoids easy upload to publish
the
website in the www.

Eugen
