Re: Drag and Drop Index .pub files into mapped FTP folder 2 cng we

Hi David:

I am back from the swamps of the Bayou, and came within 20 feet of a 15 foot
alligator while paddling a kayak down this tributary into the main bayou
swamp. Then, I get back home and while helping to clear some brush in an
overgrown field close to my home, I came within two feet of being bitten by a
five foot diamond back rattlesnake.

I think I am safer working on my website :-)

I have another question......

-------------------

I have mastered FileZilla, at least enough to transfer my saved .pub file to
the website in the form of "index_files," but for some reason I cannot upload
the home page (index.htm).

Not to sound too much like a neophyte, here is what I do:

1. I open "my computer," and and one of the icon folders on the right is
"ftp.lcn-hoa.com (my website)" which I open to examine the contents--shown
below:
_db_backups
index_files
stats
gdform.asp
index.htm
welcome.html

2. Now, the above contents are shown on the right side of my desktop screen.

3. I then open my .pub file for my Publisher 2007 webpage (on the left side
of the screen, under "my computer"), and can see only one item, as shown
below:
index_files.

I know that when one saves his work in the .pub file, all the changes are
ready for uploading to the website, using FileZilla.

4. Now, I drag and drop the index_files from the left side of my desktop
(under My Compuer) to the right side, and the contents of this updated
"index_files" replaces the website "index_files" inside of ftp.lcn-hoa.com
(my website).

5. The new index_files replaces ftp.lcn-hoa.com "index_files" on the right
side of my desktop, which does happen, because the time and date reflect the
changes made to my .pub file.

QUESTION: Where is the home page located (index.htm) so I can drag and drop
this file onto the right side of my desktop to replace the home page
(index.htm) file shown among the six items in #1 above.

When I use FileZilla, all the changed items in (index_files) from my .pub
file immediately replace the changed website pages to reflect that which I
saved when I made the changes to my .pub file.

I may NOT be doing the uploading correctly, but my method seems to work OK.
All that is left is to find the "index.htm" file among the open files and
folders on the left side of my desktop (under "computer") and drag it into
the right side of the desktop, and then use filezilla to get the job done.

Did I give you too much information??

Thanks for the help, Thomboy

David, I used to be a business professor at a University in the Seattle
area,
and I am a pretty good judge of people, and from the brief conversations
and
the help you have given me, I sense a person of sound character, with a
heart
capable and willing to help others--a much sought after quality.

I will be helping a friend cater a wedding for 800 people at some camp in
Opelousas, LA (like Camp David--ha-ha), and when I return, I will look
forward to coming back to improve my website for our home owner's
association.

Where do you call home? Who knows, we may meet someday??

Best, Thomboy

P.S. The name Thomboy comes from an old TV show, called the Walton's,
where
the key actor used the name John Boy.

It is written for Pub 2007, but if you are using IE7 instead of IE6, then
the directions for using Vista also would apply to Pub 2003. FTP and HTTP
uploading has changed with the introduction of IE7 and Vista.

The directions for uploading have become a bit muddy, but this is the
best
MSFT has to offer. That is part of the reason I suggest using a third
party
ftp client if you aren't using a Publisher built form in the site.

Have a good trip...

Thanks, David, and maybe this is why the Publisher 101 directions
discuss
publishing your .pub folder to your computer which is like publishing
to
the
web. I need to go back and review that document, and like you suggest,
creating a folder on my hard drive will help.

A friend was here several nights ago, and I think he was doing this
somehow,
because the index_files kept changing, and then we did a drag and drop
to
his
FS FTP client and up they went to the website.

I am just rusty using FTP Client software, and for that matter,
Publisher.

I am leaving Monday for New Orleans, but when I get back on April 10th,
I
will try some of your ideas, and will reread the Publisher site for
directions as to how to publish to my computer.

Many thanks for the feedback, as I need it.

You have to "Publish to the Web" to produce new html...a new index.htm
file
and the index_files folder. Saving the Pub file only saves the Pub
file...it
has nothing to do with publishing the new code. FWIW I usually create
a
folder on my hard drive where I can direct the output on a consistent
basis.
Then when I produce new, it overwrites the old each time, just like it
does
when you upload to the web...and I know where to look when it is time
to
FTP
it up.

Hi David, thanks for the detailed help regarding how to make those
nudge
changes. I do have Mozilla loaded on my PC, so I will use it a my
browser
to
see if the changes you suggest make it better for IE viewers.

Maybe you are getting tired of my questions, but I have another one.

When I began using FileZilla, I was able to connect with my host
site,
but
for some reason, after I made new changes to my Publisher site used
for
the
website you saw, and viewed MY COMPUTER, the index_files folder,
contained
below the folder in which the .pub document is stored, did not
update
when
I
saved the changes to the .pub file.

I had planned to drag and drop the updated index_files folder into
the
left
side of the FTP client, along with the index.htm, but if they don't
update
when I save the Publisher .pub file, then I am perplexed.

Any advice?

Many thanks for all your continuing help; it is much appreciated.

Thomboy,

Actually I probably just confused you by talking about the nudge
feature.
I
was looking at your goal 6, and how the text is cropped, suggesting
that
the
text box was too small. Assuming that the line below this is up
against
the
text box, I would then select the line below it, and "nudge" it
down a
couple ticks in order to make a little room to lengthen the text
box
above.
And then assuming that you have the "snap" to option enabled
(Arrange
>
Snap
and check all the options) I would drag the bottom of the text box
down
until it "snapped to" the line. Pub 2007 allows you to use the
arrow
keys
to
nudge a design element, but it does not lengthen the text box. It
is
just
a
way of fine tuning your layout along with the snap to feature.

In this case, as I look at your page again, you could still just
lengthen
the text box a tad, but also the problem might be because of the
formatting,
and in particular the numbering. I have found that bulleted lists
and
numbered lists when converted to html can give unpredictable
results.
Remember that you are using a DTP, and that not all print
formatting
techniques can be translated to web format. So in this particular
case,
you
might be able to just lengthen the text box to compensate, or you
may
need
to change the formatting. You might also try using Shift + Enter at
the
end
of each numbered item instead of Enter. This can sometimes help the
spacing
in a bulleted list. Go to View > Special Characters to see the
difference
in
the hard return.

And all this is a long winded way of saying that absolutely you
need
to
use
web preview. That will tell you what the page is going to look like
when
you
do publish it. Then you can move things around, lengthen text boxes
etc
before you publish.

I think you just install the Client version of Filezilla...don't
worry
about
the other stuff. Publisher uploading was not that bad before MSFT
changed
IE
and Vista. You can no longer FTP through IE as of IE7, and HTTP
uploading
is
also totally different. Unless you are using a form, then using a
third
party ftp client is going to be easier and faster.

If you have Dreamweaver, that is by far a better program for web
building,
but as you suggest, if you have a simple static site, Publisher is
fine.

As per FireFox...download and install a copy to test your site. It
is
a
small download, and chances are you may end up liking it better
than
IE.

Hey, David, many, many thanks for looking at the Website. I
think
you
are
right on wth your assessment, and that is actually good to hear.
I
have
not
yet used the "nudge" feature.

Does the nudge feature know how much the nudge needs to be to
eliminate
overlap issues, or do I keep looking at the website, or better,
should
I
use
the website preview tool? BTW, I am starting to hear that the
viewers
who
saw the overlaps were using either Netscape or Mozilla as their
browser,
and
that will make a HUGE difference.

I guess when I downloaded all the "information" for FileZilla, I
didn't
know
which sets I actually needed. Please look at the list I left
with
my
reply
for Rob; probably only one or two of them is needed for the FTP
Client.
I
didn't see at the FileZilla site any directions for which set of
instructions
would be needed for the client versus the server FTP software.

I was almost ready to go back to using Dreamweaver for my website
software,
but like all learning curves, because it was steeper, not that
Publisher
is
bad software, but because I can't forget my old, and outdated
habits.

Like I said, thanks for coming back to review my comments.

Using the Publisher process to upload the index.ftm and
index_files
leaves
a
lot to be desired. I know that once I get the correct copy of
FileZilla,
and
begin to use it, I will be less frustrated with this small, and
static
website. Only two pages will ever change.

Thanks, and I will most likely be back at the watering hole again
when
I
hit
another snag.
