Re: Drag and Drop Index .pub files into mapped FTP folder 2 cng we

You have to "Publish to the Web" to produce new html...a new index.htm file
and the index_files folder. Saving the Pub file only saves the Pub file...it
has nothing to do with publishing the new code. FWIW I usually create a
folder on my hard drive where I can direct the output on a consistent basis.
Then when I produce new, it overwrites the old each time, just like it does
when you upload to the web...and I know where to look when it is time to FTP
it up.

Hi David, thanks for the detailed help regarding how to make those nudge
changes. I do have Mozilla loaded on my PC, so I will use it a my browser
to
see if the changes you suggest make it better for IE viewers.
Maybe you are getting tired of my questions, but I have another one.
When I began using FileZilla, I was able to connect with my host site, but
for some reason, after I made new changes to my Publisher site used for
the
website you saw, and viewed MY COMPUTER, the index_files folder, contained
below the folder in which the .pub document is stored, did not update when
I
saved the changes to the .pub file.
I had planned to drag and drop the updated index_files folder into the
left
side of the FTP client, along with the index.htm, but if they don't update
when I save the Publisher .pub file, then I am perplexed.
Any advice?
Many thanks for all your continuing help; it is much appreciated.

Thomboy,
Actually I probably just confused you by talking about the nudge feature.
I
was looking at your goal 6, and how the text is cropped, suggesting that
the
text box was too small. Assuming that the line below this is up against
the
text box, I would then select the line below it, and "nudge" it down a
couple ticks in order to make a little room to lengthen the text box
above.
And then assuming that you have the "snap" to option enabled (Arrange >
Snap
and check all the options) I would drag the bottom of the text box down
until it "snapped to" the line. Pub 2007 allows you to use the arrow keys
to
nudge a design element, but it does not lengthen the text box. It is just
a
way of fine tuning your layout along with the snap to feature.
In this case, as I look at your page again, you could still just lengthen
the text box a tad, but also the problem might be because of the
formatting,
and in particular the numbering. I have found that bulleted lists and
numbered lists when converted to html can give unpredictable results.
Remember that you are using a DTP, and that not all print formatting
techniques can be translated to web format. So in this particular case,
you
might be able to just lengthen the text box to compensate, or you may
need
to change the formatting. You might also try using Shift + Enter at the
end
of each numbered item instead of Enter. This can sometimes help the
spacing
in a bulleted list. Go to View > Special Characters to see the difference
in
the hard return.
And all this is a long winded way of saying that absolutely you need to
use
web preview. That will tell you what the page is going to look like when
you
do publish it. Then you can move things around, lengthen text boxes etc
before you publish.
I think you just install the Client version of Filezilla...don't worry
about
the other stuff. Publisher uploading was not that bad before MSFT changed
IE
and Vista. You can no longer FTP through IE as of IE7, and HTTP uploading
is
also totally different. Unless you are using a form, then using a third
party ftp client is going to be easier and faster.
If you have Dreamweaver, that is by far a better program for web
building,
but as you suggest, if you have a simple static site, Publisher is fine.
As per FireFox...download and install a copy to test your site. It is a
small download, and chances are you may end up liking it better than IE.

Hey, David, many, many thanks for looking at the Website. I think you
are
right on wth your assessment, and that is actually good to hear. I
have
not
yet used the "nudge" feature.
Does the nudge feature know how much the nudge needs to be to eliminate
overlap issues, or do I keep looking at the website, or better, should
I
use
the website preview tool? BTW, I am starting to hear that the viewers
who
saw the overlaps were using either Netscape or Mozilla as their
browser,
and
that will make a HUGE difference.
I guess when I downloaded all the "information" for FileZilla, I didn't
know
which sets I actually needed. Please look at the list I left with my
reply
for Rob; probably only one or two of them is needed for the FTP Client.
I
didn't see at the FileZilla site any directions for which set of
instructions
would be needed for the client versus the server FTP software.
I was almost ready to go back to using Dreamweaver for my website
software,
but like all learning curves, because it was steeper, not that
Publisher
is
bad software, but because I can't forget my old, and outdated habits.
Like I said, thanks for coming back to review my comments.
Using the Publisher process to upload the index.ftm and index_files
leaves
a
lot to be desired. I know that once I get the correct copy of
FileZilla,
and
begin to use it, I will be less frustrated with this small, and static
website. Only two pages will ever change.
Thanks, and I will most likely be back at the watering hole again when
I
hit
another snag.

The good news is that I guessed wrong. Your problem is simply that you
need
to make your text boxes a bit bigger and potentially move some other
design
elements away from the text boxes. I only spotted a few, so it
shouldn't
be
that hard to lengthen the text boxes a bit. Also be sure to note the
"nudge"
tool. It is handy for moving things just a few ticks.
As Rob suggested, it appears that you downloaded the wrong version of
FileZilla. You want the client side, not the server side.

The website URL: http://www.lcn-hoa.com
Some of the pages have overlapping text and picture boxes, e.g. half
of
a
line of text is missing due to a picture image overlapping the text
box.
See
goal #6.
Thanks for looking at the site.
Another question:
I downloaded the appropriate version of FileZilla, and there is one
set
of
instructions in the documentation area is called, "Compiling
FileZilla
3
under Windows," and mentions a number of items that I don't know:
1. MinGW
2. MSYS
3. MSYS Developer Toolkit
4. Compilation flags
5. autotools
6. Liviconv
7. Libidn
8. Gettext, etc.
Do I need to make these changes to Windows Ultimate to use
FileZilla?
Thanks for following my entries, David. Your help is much
appreciated.

Thomboy,
I think you will find that once you get FileZilla installed and
learn
how
to
use it, you will find it easier and faster. Be sure to download the
documentation/instructions.
As per your other question, I am going to guess about what the
problem
is
since you did not provide a link. I am guessing that your monitor
on
your
desktop is set at 96 dpi, and your wife's laptop is set at 120 dpi.
You
can
right click your desktop, properties, settings, advanced to check
this.
Many
of the new laptops are coming set at 120 dpi from the factory.
Unfortunately
Publisher outputs everything including the text at 96 dpi, and when
you
view
it at 120 dpi the page can exhibit the symptoms you describe. And
there
is
no fix...
If that is not the problem, then post a link to a page where you
are
having
the problem, and be specific about what you are seeing.

Thanks, David, you have mentioned before using FileZilla as a FTP
client,
so
I will go to the site, download it, and begin using it to FTP my
changes
to
the host site.
Another question:
On my website, too many text box and picture images overlap. Is
there
any
easy fix without manually using Design Checker to find and fix
the
problems?
Too many viewers talk about the overlaps, but I don't see them on
my
computer
running VISTA Ultimate with a screen resolution of 1680 X 1050
pixels.
When
I use my wife's laptop, running Windows XP, with a screen
resolution
of
1440X
900 pixels, I do.
Thanks, Thomboy

When you "Publish to the Web" Publisher will produce an
"index.htm"
file
(your home page) and a "index_files" folder that contains the
supporting
graphics and additional pages to your site.
Try logging on to your FTP site BEFORE you try to drag and drop
BOTH
the
new
index.htm file and the index_files folder to the FTP site.
Sometimes
it
helps if you delete your old index.htm file and index_files
folder
from
the
FTP site before uploading the new. If that makes you paranoid,
then
just
rename the old files, and leave them where they are in case
something
goes
wrong.
Consider downloading, installing and using FileZilla for your
FTP
client.

Hey, Rob, I don't think the stats nor .pub files were
published
to
the
website. I merely mentioned all the files in the FTP folder
on
my
computer
to explain that I thought I could drag the index_files from my
Publisher
.pub
document to the FTP file and they would replace the existing
index_files
in
the FTP folder, and viola, the new pages would be published at
the
Website.
Thanks for the reply.
