Re: Open a remote website in publisher?

Rob,
Hey man, you didn't say anything about editing it in your original post. All
you said was that "heck you can't even open a Pub web with Pub ", and I was
just trying to clarify things, because you can indeed open a *.htm or *.html
file with Publisher. And yes, since you brought it up, you can even edit the
code directly, but I wouldn't advise it. I've done it, but it is a pain, and
besides if I wanted to mess with hand coding I wouldn't be using Publisher
;-) Furthermore, the edit would not be saved to the Pub file, which is
where you should be making the changes you want.
What I was trying to do was to explain when one *would* want to open a
*.html file...not to edit the file, but to reconstruct the Pub file from the
html files. I specifically said that one should not try to edit the files
this way. No way was I suggesting someone should try to edit a Pub html or
FP html. Sorry if it sounded otherwise.
Read the last section of this article by David Bartosik. It is his method of
reconstructing a Pub file from html files, that I was thinking about when I
posted.

publisher file?" :

As per the republish, over and over...that is sort of right, but it implies
that you have to republish the whole site over and over again. If you use
the incremental uploading feature in Publisher, then only the changes are
published...not the whole site. For example if you make only textual changes
on a page, and use the incremental upload, then only the *.htm file is
uploaded, not any of the graphics or the other pages of the site. None of
the weight...just 10 or 20 kb, so it is quick.
Once again, I was just trying to flesh out your answer at bit.
Gotta keep you educated about Pub, you know <g>?

Sure it is...my qualifier was Pub "web" - can you open a Publisher created
web (the html) and edit it with Publisher to edit? You can open it with
FrontPage but you'll go bonkers trying to edit it.

| Rob,
|
| FWIW, that isn't quite correct either. You can open one *.htm page of a
| Publisher web at a time with Publisher, not that you should do this to
edit
| the page. However, it is a way to tediously reconstruct a lost Pub file,
as
| you can Save As a Pub file after opening the html file. And, starting
with
| Pub 2003 at least, you can use incremental uploading, so that only the
| page(s) that is changed/edited is uploaded...not the whole site.
|
| But the fundamental question of editing a FP site with Publisher is
correct.
