Visit Defcon one more time; I've put the link Executive Reports on it which
seems to be the simplest and easiest way to accomplish your needs. The file
that appears when clicking on the link was created with Word and converted
to a pdf file. If you don't have a pdf creating program many folks here
like the free Primopdf. I don't know if it will crate links into a pdf file
or not. I use the modestly priced PDF-XChange program which is very good.
If you do a lot of pdf work consider the Tools program.

Don,
Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, I will have to create and
maintain links as this is going to be a reporting dashboard. The contents
will always be changing and the end users prefer the more polished look of
a
web site with links rather than a folder environment.
Any further ideas / thoughts you have would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I've added to the http://www.iinet.com/~defcon_one/ website two file
links
that will require a "User Name" and "Password". This is another way of
having files secure.
If you want a password protected website you could protect the entire
site
with a "User Name" and "Password" by putting the .htaccess file in the
same
folder as the website files.
If you want a password protected webpage, this can be done but would be
awkward in maintaining the site. It would require putting the particular
page in a folder and then protect the folder. If the page had any images
I
think they would also need to be in the folder; might require all image
files be copied into the folder. Not sure on this one.
I'm getting a thought what might work and be easy to create:
On the website with access by all employees, have a file link to
"Executive's Reports", a pdf file protected by "User Name" and
"Password".
The pdf file could be made as professional and art worked as you wish.
This
pdf file then would contain a list of documents, each with it's own file
link to them, i.e., Sponge, Asparagus etc. The down side is if you have
many files that will require links and they change monthly it would
require
rebuilding the links each month unless you kept the file names the same.
I'll put something on the Defcon site for you to review. This may take a
day or two but I'll try for today. I like this method but I've got
several
hundred files on my site; several hundred links does not appeal to me.
ciao, for now,

Don,
I checked this out and it is very much inline with what I am trying to
do.
Here is my scenario. I am creating a web site for a reporting
dashboard.
There will be pages that should only be visible to certain individuals
based
on their access level. Example Jane Doe can access the main pages PLUS
access
the "Executive Reports" page.
Is my interpretation correct that this can be done? If so, my big
question
is HOW???
Thanks!

Lars,
Here's some added info:
On a test website of mine I've created a link to a "User name",
"Password"
protected folder.
See if it is what you're looking for. Follow the instructions when
you
click on the Safe.

Or do you want to have only certain people to be able to have

These can be built into your website but only if the Internet
Provider
offers the means. Contact your I.P. and ask if password protected
folders
are allowed. If they are, we can go from there.
