Re: Publisher and 1&1

David (and JoAnn and Mary),

Unbelievably, and after a 70 minute call to 1&1 which was as much use as a
trapdoor in a canoe, I've got my website up and running. Just don't ask me
how because I'm still scared that it'll all come come crumbling down any
minute now.

So many thanks for your patience and understanding and if you feel like
voting for your Top 10 Scottish singles of all-time (as well as your Worst)
feel free to visit the site.

Cheers

I don't use Wise-ftp, so my best guess is Auto.

Go back to the Webspace Explorer, keep the logs folder (that is part of your
webstats, and other 1&1 files), I doubt that you need the tmp file...but
that shouldn't be causing a problem. Perhaps rename it, by adding ".old" to
the file name. Then if you discover you need it, you can rename it and
remove the .old extension. Delete the 13 HTM files, the index.htm file, and
the filelist.xml, and the Pub file. In other words, clean up the folder.

Then go back to your Pub file. Publish to the Web, to a folder on your
computer somewhere you can find it. Then open Wise-FTP, find the folder that
you saved the HTML files in, and upload the newly created index.htm file and
the index_files folder...probably using the Auto.

I believe the two problems below were caused as a result of me changing the
B6dU8XyZ style password to something more memorable...which I then forgot
that I had done! Sorry.

I uploaded the index_files within Wise-FTP. But where do I go from here in
terms of 1&1. When I spoke to someone from 1&1 last night they said that
website was coming up with loads of "binary". On the Wise-FTP there's a
bit
called Transfer Mode with three choices, ASCII, Binary and Auto. Which
one(s)
should I select?

When I get into the Control Panel in 1&1 there's a section called Webspace
Explorer. In it there are two folders, Logs and index_files, and 1 x TMP
file, 13 x HTM files (page numbers), 1 x HTM file (index.htm), 1 x XML
(filelist.xml) and 1 x PUB (index.htm.pub). Am I in the right place and
what
do I do? I have a feeling the PUB file shouldn't be there because 1&1 said
they don't support PUB files.

I'm going to get some Aspirin...

Hi David,

Problem 1: Received the following error message: "This error message is
usually associated with an attempt to access an FTP (File Transfer
Protocol)
web site through a fire wall/proxy server and the proxy settings are
not
set
correctly to gain access.
To avoid this error message, change the FTP proxy settings to allow
access
to the site." when trying to Open URL in Publish dialog box.

Problem 2: In Wise_FTP I get this error messgae "There was an
unexpected
disconnect from server. Do you want to re-connect?" It doesn't let me.

I've followed your very helpful blogs to the letter so it must be me,
I'm
a
jinx!!

I would let Publisher use the default index.htm, assuming you are
using
Pub
2003.

Let's assume that for the moment, your settings are correct in your
control
panel on 1&1. You can use the FTP program you downloaded, or set up
your
FTP
connection with Publisher. To use Publisher read the following
article:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/pages/80556.aspx

If you are going to use a form on your site, then you will have to use
HTTP
uploading protocol. "How to publish a Publisher web in HTTP":
http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/pages/80557.aspx

You might want to try using Wise-FTP right now. Open that program, and
setup
your FTP connection. You might read the instructions under help in
Wise_FTP.
You will use ftp.jocknroll.co.uk as your address, and then the
username
provided you by 1&1, should be something like this "n1234567", and a
password that might look like "4RL1tQ9G" ...once again given to your
by
1&1.
While you are in the process, you might see a Passive Mode option, and
you
might want to clear that if it is checked...especially if you can't
login
to
your account.

Once you have your ftp site created, then login to your site. You
should
probably see a ".index.html.old" file, and a "logs" folder. If you do,
then
this is your root directory and where you upload your Publisher
produced
"index.htm" file, and "index_files" folder.

Good luck...

I have woken up this morning with a fresh desire to beat this
problem.
Apologies for the post of self-pity!

David,

I have gone into the Domain Overview section of the 1and1 Control
Panel. I
have ticked the box beside jocknroll.co.uk (my chosen domain) but as
soon
as
I do that the destination menu greys out.

Stupid question: do I have to save the web pages I've produced (as
made
on
Publisher) as "index.htm" or "index.html" ?

I'll be back in a few minutes once I've had a brain-food breakfast
of
muesli
and caffeine!

Cheers

Paul,

Don't feel too stupid...or as someone from England told me, like a
"dimbo".
1&1 is not really clear about how and where to upload your files.
And
their
customer support leaves a bit to be desired too. I spent quite a
bit
of
time
helping another person with the same problem.

In that case at least, it wasn't clear as to where to upload the
files.
If
you are able to access your webspace by FTP, then the index.htm
file
and
index_files folder need to be uploaded to the root folder which
just
shows a
"/."

If this doesn't help clarify your issue, then before you post back,
log
into
your control panel, and check a couple things for me. I don't
remember
exactly how you get there, but check under Domain management or
some
such.
You will want to get to where you see your domain name listed in a
box
where
the menu items are New, Destination, Contact, DNS, Transfer, Google
sitemaps, Extras, and Info. What does it say under Destination?
Does
it
say
Home Directory?

Then check the box beside your domain name, and click the
Destination
menu
item, and then Show Destination. Then look under Home Directory,
and
see
if
the Existing directory is a simple forward slash with a period,
like
this
/.
If it isn't then make note of what it is, when you post back.

Mary,

Thanks for that. However, as a complete novice, I shall take my
preferred
option of having a good cry and going to my bed for ten to twelve
hours.
Perhaps it'll make some sense in the morning because at the
moment
it
justs
makes me feel rather stupid.

I've just spent days putting a 15-page website together on
Publisher
2003.
After registering a domian name and getting a web host (1&1) I
thought
it
would be plain sailing to get the site up and running.

I've just spent 40 minutes on the phone to 1&1 and I'm none
the
wiser
or
further forward into how I can get my site up.

I've followed the Help on Publisher and followed the
instructions
to
the
letter but still nothing. 1&1 even got me to download another
FTP
Server
(Wise-FTP) and try doing it through that but again nothing.

Any suggestions because I can't afford to tear anymore hair
out!!
