I didn't start the idea that if you use a counter then you're an amateur. I
used to use on too until I learned that that's a dead giveaway of a
beginner.
What people need to do is figure out *why* they want a counter and then
google for more information on how to get that information. Knowing that x
number of people hit your site really tells you nothing, especially if
you're checking it often to see how many people have been there.

Instead of labeling people as amateur for using a counter, and then
excusing the insult by saying there is a better way, why don't you tell
them the better way in the first place? Don't you think that would be a
bit more constructive?

I'm just saying there's other ways to do that. Counters also count the
number of times that you visit the site as well as others. I know that I
hit my site more often than anyone else. I use a different service (free)
that tells me more than just how many people. There's no counter on the
page and it excludes me. ;-)

I also use a counter. My reason is I put proprietary documents in a
logon, password protected folder and I want to get an idea how many lodge
members are making use of the files.

Hey JoAnn, I use a counter on my web site... It's an ego thing. I will
admit I have to change my vendor now and then, seems they come and go.

Food for thought: Counters are notoriously wrong and a sure sign of an
amateur web designer.
