I didn't see any issues when reviewing your site in IE 6.1 (pc)
(are you using IE on a mac? - don't)
Some things to note however,
2003 does create large files refer to http://www.davidbartosik.com/pub11.htm
Most importantly your site is graphics intensive.
Graphics take time to load and add to the size.
You might rethink the site layout and design fewer images on the home page.
Instead use a layout that spreads the images out for fewer on a page. And
use a photo editor to reduce the image resolution to lower the files sizes.
As for your last sentence, don't worry about any of that.
