Re: Newby question about amounts in an activity

There is nowhere to put an "amount" into an activity.
MSP does not know about quantities and production rates.
That information has to come from somewhere else, such as your experience
and knowledge of the particular task.

This because MSP does not know why you might estimate a particular duration
for a task.
If you think you can lay 1000 bricks per day, you might estimate "Lay 10000
bricks" as a 10 day task, but you might just as well estimate 12 days to
build in some contingency.
This would be a straightforward estimate which implies a necessary
production rate, but it is only implied, not explicit, and the estimated
duration need not be based solely on the quantity and rate.
For the bricklaying, it is reasonable that the 10000 bricks are a Material
resource.
For your "Move Dirt" task, the dirt is not a Resource, but the guy who moves
it is.

MSP can just as easily be used for tasks which don't involve quantities or
rates at all but still have an estimated duration.
"Write a 5000 word report" might have a 5 days duration estimate, which
implies a rate of 1000 words per day, but the author might just think about
it for 4 days and write the whole 5000 on the last day.

However, for you example, there are spare number fields that you can
customise to calculate a duration based on amounts and rates, and then you
can just input that into the duration.
Have one re-named "Amount" and another "Rate" and another which is
Amount/Rate.

To all

Please forgive this newby question but I have been trying for a while to
figure it out with little success.

I have an activity : lets say the activity is to move a pile of gravel.
The
pile is 10 tons and I can move 1 ton per day on average. How do I create
this activity in project where i can enter the tons and the resource to
move
the pile and it will give me a duration. The next activity after that one
is
another pile that is a different tonnage (say 12.6 tons).

The question is .. where do I put the tonnage into the activity? Is it a
material resource or something along those lines.. it is not very clear in
MS Project where you can place the amount within the activity?

AHGA!
