Use a text field. That way you can group by it as well.
Making a selection with the value you want at the top and hitting CTRL+D
should fill down.

I have a project that has 4 stages in in. Tasks are similar in each stage.
Is there an eas way to ID the tasks by stage withou having to entert
"Stage
#" in each task name?
