Re: Adding subtasks to a project

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Hi Ben,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

I used to be in the RAF dealing with very similar problems, but that was
before the advent of PCs :) However, I suggest you create a template (see
FAQ Item: 8. New Project Template. FAQs, companion products and other
useful Project information can be seen at this web
address:http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm) for each type of servicing. Then
create templates for each "standard" repair - you can do this by analysing
previous sets of tasks for similar repairs. Then, for a new aircraft, open
a master project from the main template, and import each of the repair tasks
as separate projects, or copy/paste them into the appropriate place in the
master. Link the start of each repair to the appropriate milestone in the
main project, and you're away. :) Don't forget to separate out any new
repair tasks and create templates from them for future use.

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :-)

This can't be done in Project except by creating an Addon for
Project, or writing a VBA application. I assume you already have
templates for each Aircraft and type of service? They will have all
standard tasks for that Aircraft/Engine service?

This might seem easy enough but this is my question. my company
conducts aircraft inspections, and we have a standard project we use
with every aircraft. As we find discrepancies with the aircraft we
need to add the repair task to the project. Right now I add every
new repair task in the project manually which can take me a while.
What I'd like to do is set the basic project as a template, than
have the ability to select the required repair task from a dropdown
menu to add to the main project. With each one of these repair tasks
having numerous tasks themselves this ability would be a huge time
saver for me. Any help with this would be great. Ben
