That is basically what the reference talks about but I guess it is nice
to have the details right here. I might point out that this approach
only works if the subtasks are separated in time, otherwise the line
gets real cluttered if the subtasks are concurrent or overlapping.

Sorry, Project doesn't have a lot of flexibility when it comes to
graphics presentation. The only way to show multiple tasks/milestones on
a single line is to configure special formatting at the summary line
level. There have been posts in the past (i.e. last couple of years) in
this newsgroup detailing how to do that (one reference I found was:
"schedule with multiple items - one bar" posted on 17 March 2004).

You might also want to take a look at a Project add-on made by Kidasa
(Kidasa.com) called "Milstones".
