Hi Mike.
I appreciate your response. I'm also posting this to the NG for others to
benefit:
* The spooler error message (0x80040E14) is independent of the 2 hotfixes
you've currently applied. This was a misunderstanding on my part. So,
neither update that you've currently applied is meant to address the
spooler error message.
* When we release an update to fully resolve the spooler problem, we'll
most
likely also have a Microsoft Knowledge Base article describing the problem
and pointing to the resolution.
* The Project Product Group is carefully reviewing all options related to
the
spooler problem. It's a difficult challenge because there are so many ways
to address this concern. And, we need to be cautious with existing
functionality. Needless to say, I don't have any other information
available other than the product group is carefully reviewing each option
available.
There are no details to release at this point in time. Right now, we don't
have a fix for this situation.
For anyone who is experiencing the spooler error message, please contact
Product Support Services.
Sincerely,
Rita Nikas

|
| Hi Mike.
|
| I apologize that we were unable to respond sooner (I was out of the
country
| until very recently).
|
| I know that we've seen a few situations of either the 0x80040E14 or
| 0x80004005 spooler error message with Project Server 2003 when the
manager
| accepts updates on the Updates page in Microsoft Project Web Access.
| Essentially, you can't update the assignment and in PWA, you'll notice
that
| some updates aren't processed.
|
| What causes this? Resources using the option to Assign yourself to an
| existing task and the resources are already assigned. In case you're
| curious, I have steps (at the end of this message) to reproduce this
| problem.
|
| To resolve this issue, there are specific client and server updates that
| need to be obtained. This addresses resolving the spooler error message
in
| *new* projects. But, existing projects still receive the spooler errors
| until you accept all updates and do a few other things. At the point of
| accepting all updates, updates are applied to the tasks in Microsoft
| Project but will not be removed from the Updates page. You'll need to
save
| the existing projects as mpp files, delete the projects via Clean up
| Microsoft Project Server database and then import the mpp file via Import
| Projects to Enterprise. After the projects are imported select Republish
| Assignments and select the option to Overwrite actual work entered by the
| resources from the Collaborate\Publish menu.
|
| Now, to get ahold of the appropriate client and server updates, you'll
need
| to contact Microsoft Product Support Services and work with a support
| professional (these updates aren't downloadable by the generic population
| at this time). You can review your different support options at this
page:

| | Subject: PS03 error 0x80040E14 - Repairing the problem
| | Date: Tue, 4 May 2004 11:41:02 -0700
| |
| | I have seen a number of reports of the 0x80040E14 spooler error. In
| fact, I have posted descriptions the circumstances where duplicate
| assignments occur in PS03 --causing this error to occur.
|
| However, I now have a project that does not appear to have duplicate
| assignments, but the 0x80040E14 is generated whenever you try to publish
| the project. Even after adding a new resource, assigning that resource
to
| a new task, and publishing just that one task I get this spooler error.
|
| So I now have a project that cannot be published without an error. Since
| you can't publish, you also can't add new resources, tasks, or
assignments.
| The Project Spooler gives no indication on the problem that is causing
the
| problem or what one should do to address the error.
|
| Has anyone ever gotten a reply from Microsoft on what to do when this
| happens? What caused this error? Has anyone ever recovered from this
| codition?
|
| The event log has set of five errors for each assignment that you attempt
| to publish. So if I republish a task with three resources, I will get 15
| errors in the log (five for each assignment).
|
| Within these five errors, the first, and most interesting is:

|
| I have checked the MSP_WEB_PROJECTS table and there is a single record
with
| the identified PROJ_ID (615). This record contains the information for
the
| project I am trying to publish.
|
| It appears that the spooler is trying to insert a new record for this
